Ballards LLP: New Vacancy
Role: Client Lead – Outsourced Accounts
Location: Droitwich / Worcester
Flexibility: Hybrid: 60% office based
Are you an experienced practice accountant who enjoys the variety of working with owner-managed businesses and wants genuine ownership of your client relationships?
We are looking for a Client Lead to join our Outsourced Accounts team at Ballards. This is a hands-on, client-facing role where you will manage a varied portfolio of owner-managed businesses, acting as a trusted day-to-day contact and helping clients keep their finances accurate, organised and moving forward.
You will work across management accounts, VAT, bookkeeping and wider outsourced finance support. The role is fast-paced and varied: you may be balancing multiple VAT deadlines, management accounts cycles and client requests at the same time, so strong organisation, confidence with clients and a proactive approach are essential.
What you'll be doing
- Taking ownership of a varied portfolio of owner-managed business clients and building strong relationships with business owners.
- Preparing management accounts, month-end journals, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns, using strong practical VAT knowledge to identify and resolve queries.
- Providing bookkeeping support and maintaining accurate client accounting records.
- Working with CIS and PAYE/payroll-related accounting information where relevant.
- Managing multiple recurring client deadlines and priorities at the same time.
- Proactively chasing information, anticipating client requirements and keeping work progressing without needing to be chased.
- Managing client expectations professionally, including changing priorities and urgent requests.
- Using Xero and other cloud accounting systems, including providing practical client support and Xero training where required.
- Working closely with colleagues across Outsourced Accounts and the wider Business Services team, supporting and reviewing junior colleagues where appropriate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
