About the Role

Our client is a growing accountancy practice looking for a Client Manager to manage a portfolio of clients across compliance, outsourcing, management accounts, and business advisory services.

This is a varied role for someone who can take ownership of client relationships, manage deadlines, review work, support junior staff, and provide commercially focused advice to business owners.

Compliance Work

  • Prepare and file year-end accounts for limited companies, LLPs, partnerships, and sole traders.
  • Prepare and file business tax returns and capital allowances claims.
  • Prepare and file Self Assessments and personal tax computations.
  • Prepare and file Capital Gains Tax computations.
  • Assist with implementing R&D tax claims into company accounts and tax returns.
  • Deliver compliance work within agreed target dates, normally within 8–10 weeks of the period end.
  • Provide tax planning and advice to help reduce the tax burden on businesses and their owners.
  • Carry out the initial review of year-end assignments, business and personal tax computations, and tax returns before final manager or director review.

Outsourcing and Advisory Work

  • Manage a portfolio of clients across bookkeeping, VAT, and management accounts.
  • Review periodic bookkeeping, VAT returns, and management accounts to ensure accuracy before final review.
  • Ensure client records and documents are received in sufficient time to meet all deadlines.
  • Ensure completed client documents are returned promptly.
  • Provide support with payroll services across the wider client base.
  • Prepare, review, and file P11D returns.
  • Periodically review client processes to improve efficiency and productivity.
  • Prepare periodic management accounts for clients within your portfolio and the wider client base.
  • Prepare management information and performance analysis.
  • Deliver management information to clients within agreed target dates, normally between 10 and 20 working days after the period end.
  • Advise clients on improving profitability and business efficiency through ongoing monitoring, effective controls, and the redesign of business processes.
  • Help clients control and manage cash flow using appropriate accounting software and applications.
  • Carry out the initial review of management accounts before final manager or director review.
  • Prepare integrated financial projections and budgets incorporating profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow.
  • Prepare break-even analyses.
  • Prepare business plans and assist with sourcing and negotiating finance.
  • Conduct business valuations for client businesses.

Team and Practice Development

  • Support senior colleagues in managing a wider portfolio of clients.
  • Effectively manage your own client portfolio in relation to service delivery, reporting deadlines, and communication.
  • Assist with the training and development of less experienced Client Managers, Senior Client Accountants, Client Accountants, trainees, and apprentices.
  • Provide ongoing support, coaching, and development to junior members of staff.
  • Train internal staff and clients on accounting software, cloud-based financial systems, and supporting applications.
  • Build strong, professional relationships with clients.
  • Help develop the practice’s use of cloud accounting platforms and connected applications to deliver a proactive, value-added service.
  • Manage a team of senior accountants, accountants, and back-office staff working across your client portfolio.
  • Assist with the ongoing billing process.

Administrative and General Duties

  • Keep client records and details accurate and up to date.
  • Use TaxCalc, Xero, and other cloud-based accounting platforms and applications on behalf of clients.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce new clients and support the promotion of services to prospective clients, financial institutions, and the wider business community.
  • Keep the practice’s accountancy management system up to date to support accurate, real-time information.
  • Record timesheets accurately on a daily basis.
  • Support the administration team with the setup and engagement process for new clients.
  • Provide cover for the administration team when required, including answering telephones, handling post, and attending client meetings.
  • Help supervise telephone coverage and ensure calls are answered promptly.
  • Support the Operations Director with work in progress, job planning, and weekly work tracking.
  • Attend meetings with portfolio clients alongside a manager or director.
  • Assist with the credit-control process for clients within your portfolio when required.
  • Review confirmation statements prepared by the client administration team before they are filed.

The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • At least five years’ experience working in an accountancy practice.
  • AAT or ACCA qualification, part-qualification, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience preparing accounts and tax returns for a range of business structures.
  • Strong knowledge of bookkeeping, VAT, management accounts, and personal tax.
  • The ability to review work accurately before final manager or director review.
  • Experience providing business advisory support, including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and profitability analysis.
  • The ability to manage a portfolio of clients and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience training, supporting, or managing junior staff.
  • Confidence using Xero, TaxCalc, and other cloud-based accounting systems.
  • A proactive and commercially minded approach to client service.
  • The ability to identify opportunities to improve client processes and introduce additional services.
