Client Portfolio Manager

Salary: £42,000 to £48,000 depending on experience
Location: Goole, East Yorkshire
Working pattern: Full time, permanent
Hybrid working: 3 days in the Goole office, 2 days from home

The opportunity

Rhombus Accounting is growing, and we're looking for an experienced Client Portfolio Manager to join us.

We're looking for someone who can take ownership of a portfolio of SME clients, build excellent relationships with the business owners we work with, and help us deliver the proactive, technology-led service we're building the firm around.

We don't want to be an accountancy practice that simply produces a set of accounts once a year and answers questions when asked.

We want to understand our clients' businesses, give them useful financial information throughout the year, and identify opportunities and issues before they have to ask.

You'll therefore be responsible for much more than completing compliance work. You'll become the main point of contact for your clients, manage their accounting and tax requirements, help them understand their numbers, and provide practical, commercially focused support.

You'll also be joining Rhombus at an early stage of our growth. That means you'll have genuine input into our systems, processes, technology, and the way we deliver our service.

For someone who performs and shares our ambitions for the business, there will be significant scope for the role to develop as Rhombus grows, including a potential route to equity for the right person.

What you'll be doing

You'll take day-to-day ownership of a portfolio of SME clients, including limited companies, sole traders, and partnerships.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing your own portfolio and acting as the main day-to-day contact for your clients.
  • Building strong, long-term relationships with business owners.
  • Managing and prioritising your workload across multiple clients, ensuring work is completed accurately and deadlines are met.
  • Preparing and reviewing annual accounts and financial statements.
  • Preparing and reviewing corporation tax computations and returns.
  • Preparing sole trader and partnership accounts and associated tax returns.
  • Preparing and reviewing VAT returns.
  • Preparing management accounts and providing clients with useful commentary and insight into their financial performance.
  • Reviewing bookkeeping and accounting records, identifying errors, and helping clients improve the quality of their financial information.
  • Handling client queries and providing clear, practical advice.
  • Leading client meetings and maintaining proactive contact throughout the year.
  • Identifying tax planning opportunities and areas where clients could improve their financial systems, processes, or reporting.
  • Supporting the onboarding of new clients and ensuring they receive a great experience from the outset.
  • Helping to develop and improve Rhombus's own systems, processes, and ways of working.
  • Reviewing work completed by others and supporting the development of future team members as Rhombus grows.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Some of our clients operate the VAT Margin Scheme. Previous experience in this area isn't required, and full training will be provided.

Technology is a big part of how we work

Rhombus is a Xero-only practice, and technology is central to how we're building the firm.

Our current technology stack includes Xero, Dext, Apron, and Fathom/Syft Analytics, and we're actively exploring how AI and automation can make both our own work and our clients' businesses better.

We're not looking for someone who needs to know every piece of software on day one.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable with technology, enjoys learning new systems, and naturally questions whether there's a more efficient way of doing something.

If a repetitive task can be automated, we want to explore it.

If a process can be improved, we want to improve it.

If technology can give a client better information or save them time, we want to use it.

Moving beyond traditional compliance

High-quality compliance work is the foundation of what we do, and getting it right is non-negotiable.

But we don't believe an accountant's value should end there.

We want our Client Portfolio Manager to look at a client's accounts and ask questions such as:

  • What are these numbers telling us?
  • Is there something the client should know?
  • Is there a tax planning opportunity we've identified?
  • Could their bookkeeping or financial processes work better?
  • Is there something we can help with before it becomes a problem?

You'll need the technical ability to deliver excellent accounting and tax work, but equally important is having the curiosity and commercial awareness to look beyond the immediate job.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for a Qualified Accountant who has developed strong technical skills within an accountancy practice and is comfortable taking responsibility for clients and their work.

You'll ideally have:

  • ACA, ACCA, or AAT qualification, or be qualified by experience with a strong accountancy practice background.
  • Significant experience working within an accountancy practice.
  • Experience managing your own portfolio of SME clients, or substantial experience taking responsibility for client relationships and deliverables.
  • Strong experience preparing and reviewing limited company accounts.
  • Experience with sole trader and partnership accounts.
  • Good working knowledge of corporation tax and personal tax.
  • Good practical VAT knowledge.
  • Experience preparing management accounts.
  • Experience reviewing bookkeeping and identifying errors and opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong Xero knowledge.
  • Excellent organisation and the ability to manage multiple clients, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Confidence in communicating directly with business owners and leading client conversations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good commercial awareness and the ability to explain accounting and tax matters clearly.

Technical ability is important, but we're equally interested in how you work.

We're looking for someone who takes ownership, communicates well, and doesn't need to be chased.

Someone who's comfortable picking up the phone and speaking to clients.

Someone who spots an issue and thinks about how to solve it.

Someone who is curious about technology and AI rather than resistant to change.

And someone who wants to help us build and improve the business rather than simply inherit a job description.

What we can offer you

£42,000 to £48,000 salary
Depending on experience.

Why Rhombus?

There are plenty of accountancy practices where you can manage a portfolio of clients.

What we can offer is the opportunity to join something early.

We're building a modern accountancy firm around great client relationships, good technology, efficient processes, and useful financial information.

We're small enough that your ideas will genuinely matter, but ambitious about where we're going.

As the business grows, we want the people who help us build it to grow with it.

If you're an experienced practice accountant who enjoys working with SME business owners, embraces technology, and wants the opportunity to have a genuine influence on the firm you're part of, please get in touch.
