ABOUT THE NEST CLUB
Founded in 2018, The Nest Club is a specialist psychotherapy practice supporting individuals, couples and families through relationships, fertility, pregnancy, loss, parenthood and family life. Our clients come to us with everything from relationship difficulties, infidelity, separation and divorce to fertility treatment, pregnancy anxiety, reproductive loss, birth trauma, postnatal mental health, parenting overwhelm, identity changes, family conflict and major life transitions. As The Nest Club grows, we’re looking for an experienced Clinical Director to provide senior clinical oversight of the practice and help us build the clinical frameworks, standards and governance that underpin excellent care.
THE ROLE
This is a senior freelance role focused on practice-level clinical governance and oversight. Our therapists are freelance practitioners. They maintain their own professional registration/accreditation, insurance and external clinical supervision and remain responsible for practising ethically and within their individual scope of competence. You will provide senior oversight of The Nest Club as a psychotherapy practice establishing the frameworks within which our clinicians work and ensuring we have robust, proportionate systems for clinical quality, safeguarding, risk, recruitment, client allocation, student placements and professional standards. You’ll work closely with the Founder to build a practice that is safe, ethical, thoughtful and genuinely specialist.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Governance & Practice Oversight
- Develop, review and oversee The Nest Club’s clinical governance framework
- Establish clinical standards, policies and quality assurance processes
- Oversee safeguarding and clinical risk frameworks and escalation procedures
- Develop processes for clinical incidents, significant events and complaints
- Establish standards around confidentiality, consent, information sharing and professional boundaries
- Develop clinical record-keeping and documentation standards
- Establish client suitability, exclusion and onward-referral criteria
- Ensure therapists understand their responsibilities and scope of practice
- Review clinical policies and ensure they remain current, proportionate and workable
- Identify patterns, risks and areas for improvement across the practice
Safeguarding & Risk
Provide senior practice-level oversight of safeguarding and clinical risk. This will include:
- Developing clear safeguarding and risk protocols
- Establishing escalation pathways and thresholds
- Ensuring appropriate documentation and reporting processes
- Reviewing significant safeguarding or clinical incidents
- Advising the practice on complex governance or risk matters
- Establishing appropriate pathways to statutory, medical, psychiatric and emergency services where required
- Ensuring learning from incidents is reflected in practice-wide improvements
Therapist Recruitment & Clinical Standards
Help us maintain a consistently high clinical bar across our team. You will:
- Establish qualification, experience and accreditation requirements
- Review applicants from a clinical perspective
- Conduct or contribute to clinical interviews
- Assess therapists’ experience, specialist training and scope of competence
- Establish standards for individual, couples and family therapists
- Ensure appropriate professional registration/accreditation, insurance, DBS and external supervision arrangements
- Develop clinical onboarding and induction
- Establish expectations around ongoing CPD
- Ensure therapists understand Nest policies, safeguarding procedures, risk protocols and professional responsibilities

Client Assessment, Suitability & Allocation
Develop and oversee a clear practice-wide framework for determining which clients The Nest Club can appropriately support and which therapist is best placed to work with them.
The Clinical Director may provide senior practice-level consultation where questions of suitability, risk or allocation fall outside normal processes, without replacing the treating therapist’s external clinical supervision.
STUDENT & TRAINEE PLACEMENTS
An important part of The Nest Club’s development will be creating high-quality placements for student and trainee counsellors and psychotherapists. The Clinical Director will provide practice-level clinical governance of the placement programme, including:
- Developing the framework for The Nest Club to operate as a placement provider
- Establishing relationships with appropriate universities and counselling/psychotherapy training institutions
- Setting entry criteria and appropriate stages of training for Nest placements
- Clinically reviewing and interviewing prospective students
- Establishing requirements around training status, DBS, insurance and supervision
- Developing student induction and mandatory Nest training
- Establishing minimum competencies before students begin seeing clients
- Developing clear student scope-of-practice criteria
- Establishing which clients and presentations are appropriate for trainee therapists
- Developing risk and complexity thresholds for student allocations
- Establishing appropriate caseload limits
- Ensuring appropriate client consent to working with a trainee therapist
- Establishing processes for student clinical records and data
- Clarifying responsibilities between The Nest Club, students, training institutions and supervisors
- Establishing safeguarding and risk escalation procedures
- Managing concerns around competence, conduct or fitness to practise
- Liaising with training institutions where appropriate
- Ensuring continuity of client care when placements end
- Reviewing incidents, complaints and safeguarding concerns relating to student work
- Monitoring the overall quality and safety of the placement programme
Students will have formal clinical supervision appropriate to the requirements of their training institution and professional pathway. The Clinical Director’s role is to ensure appropriate supervision arrangements exist and that The Nest Club fulfils its responsibilities as a placement provider — not automatically to act as each student’s clinical supervisor.

A central part of the role will be helping define what excellent clinical practice looks like at The Nest Club. Our work sits at the intersection of relationships, reproductive mental health and family life. We want our clinical standards, induction and ongoing learning to reflect how interconnected these experiences are — fertility and relationships; pregnancy and identity; becoming parents and couple dynamics; parenting and family systems; separation, divorce and co-parenting; loss, trauma and intimacy.

The Nest Club is growing and some of our clinical infrastructure is still being developed. You’ll work with the Founder to establish clear, proportionate processes covering the client journey from first contact through to ending therapy, including:
- Assessment and allocation
- Informed consent and contracting
- Clinical documentation and data responsibilities
- Safeguarding and risk
- Therapist responsibilities
- Cancellations and non-attendance
- Therapist absence
- Changing therapist
- Endings and discharge
- Complaints and clinical incidents
- Onward referral
- Student placements
- Quality assurance
ABOUT YOU
We’re looking for a highly experienced senior clinician who understands psychotherapy practice from both a clinical and governance perspective. You are likely to be a senior psychotherapist, clinical/counselling psychologist, systemic/family psychotherapist or similarly experienced psychological practitioner.
We would expect:
- A substantial professional qualification in psychotherapy, psychology, counselling or systemic/family therapy
- Current registration/accreditation with an appropriate UK professional body
- Ideally 8+ years’ post-qualification clinical experience
- Significant experience within psychotherapy or psychological therapy services
- Direct experience of clinical governance, service leadership or practice oversight
- Strong safeguarding and clinical risk knowledge
- Experience developing clinical policies, procedures and standards
- Experience recruiting, assessing or onboarding therapists
- An understanding of the governance requirements surrounding student/trainee placements
- Strong knowledge of professional ethics and boundaries
- Excellent judgement and decision-making
- A collaborative and thoughtful approach to clinical leadership
Experience within relationships, couples/family therapy, fertility, reproductive or perinatal mental health, parenting, separation/divorce, trauma or related fields would be particularly valuable.
