Job Description

Clinical Educator- Theatres and Cardiac Services

Cromwell Hospital, SW5 0TU (5 mins walk from Earls Court underground or 7 mins walk from Gloucester Road underground.)

£55,000 Per Annum And Above, Dependant On Experience.

Permanent.

Monday to Friday. 37.5 hrs a week, 7.5 hr shifts a day.

You’ll Help Us Make Health Happen By

The Clinical Educator is responsible for leading education, competency development, induction and professional development across operating theatres, cardiac and angiography services, interventional services, and associated perioperative areas. You will work collaboratively with clinical and operational leaders, consultants, and the wider Clinical Education Team to build a skilled, competent, and compliant workforce that delivers safe, effective, evidence-based, and person-centred care.

The role combines clinical education with practice development, governance, and quality improvement. You will be a visible and accessible expert resource, translating learning from incidents, complaints, audits, patient feedback, research and national guidance into targeted education and sustainable improvements in practice. The role will also support the safe introduction of new equipment, technologies, procedures, and service developments.

  • Lead the development, delivery and evaluation of an annual education and workforce development plan for Theatres, Cardiac and Perioperative Services.
  • Design, implement and review specialty-specific competency frameworks and learning pathways for scrub practice, anaesthetics, recovery, angiography, Surgical First Assistants, Surgical Care Practitioners, robotic surgery, interventional procedures, and advanced clinical skills.
  • Assess and sign off competence using direct observation, supervised practice, simulation, clinical work records, and other appropriate assessment methods.
  • Deliver high-quality classroom, practical and clinical teaching for registered professionals, support workers, students, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Support preceptorship, mentorship, practice assessment, and clinical supervision, ensuring staff who undertake assessment responsibilities are appropriately prepared.
  • Identify individual and service-learning needs and develop targeted programmes in response to clinical priorities, audit findings, incidents, complaints, patient feedback, research, national guidance, and service change.
  • Maintain accurate competency, attendance and training records and provide clear reports on workforce capability.

Key Skills / Qualifications Needed For This Role

  • Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse or HCPC registration as an Operating Department Practitioner.
  • Degree in Nursing, Operating Department Practice, or a related healthcare discipline, or working towards.
  • Practice Assessor, mentorship, teaching or assessing qualification, or equivalent experience.
  • PG Cert in Education- Desirable
  • A minimum of 3 years clinical experience in operating theatres, cardiac, angiography or perioperative services, with the ability to practise at the level required by the post.
  • Experience of delivering, monitoring, and evaluating clinical education and competency-based programmes.
  • Experience assessing clinical competence and developing competencies, protocols, or learning resources.
  • Experience supporting clinical audit, governance, quality improvement, and implementation of change.
