Job Overview
Frimley Park Hospital is a regional vascular centre offering emergency and elective vascular services to a population of 1.2 million. There are 8 vascular surgeons with 7-8 full day vascular lists per week. The hospital performs more vascular operations per annum than the majority of the London hospitals. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is used in the preoperative assessment of high-risk vascular patients, as well as patients undergoing major colorectal surgery.
We have a new opportunity to join our team as a Clinical Fellow on a 12 months Fixed Term contract.
This role is aimed at senior trainees who are in possession of the FRCA (or equivalent) or CCT holders seeking specialised training in high-risk anaesthesia for vascular surgery. However, post-primary candidates displaying aptitude and interest will be considered.
Main duties of the job
The main duties will be dependent on the grade and prior experience of the successful applicant, but may include:
- Appreciation of the implications of major comorbidities on the perioperative management of vascular patients.
- Use of national guidelines, research, risk stratification, clinical assessment and CPET in assisting with pre-optimisation, perioperative management, and decision-making.
- To have a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and risks of regional, combined regional/general and general anaesthetic techniques for major vascular surgery.
- Independent preoperative assessment (in-patients and clinic setting) of patients having major vascular surgery and formulation of a perioperative care plans including any necessary pre-optimisation.
- Contribution to multidisciplinary team meetings in planning for patient care.

The exact timetable will be tailored to fit the Fellow’s specific interests.
The Fellow will take part in the trainee on call rota, being on call for the intensive care unit, obstetrics or theatres dependent on the requirements of the department.

- Full GMC Registration
- Primary FRCA
Desirable criteria
- Final FRCA or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of undergraduate and post graduate teaching
- Competence in adult general anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia and management of the intensive care unit with remote supervision
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit
Desirable criteria
- Vascular anaesthesia experience
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Interest in development of vascular anaesthesia and CPET skill and experience
- Understanding of clinical governance
- Demonstrates good interpersonal and communication skills
- Motivated, able to take initiative
- Aptitude for team working
