Clinical Lead
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical Lead to join our Team based at Bristol Ambulance HQ.
The Clinical Lead is Bristol Ambulance’s principal clinical leadership role and is responsible for the leadership, management and oversight of the organisation’s clinical functions, patient safety, clinical governance, quality improvement and clinical assurance arrangements.
Reporting directly to the Director of Operations and forming part of the Bristol Ambulance Senior Leadership Team, the postholder provides professional clinical leadership across the organisation and ensures services are delivered safely, effectively and in accordance with appropriate professional, contractual and regulatory standards.
The Clinical Lead has responsibility for maintaining oversight of clinical practice, clinical competence, patient safety, clinical audit, medicines governance, Patient Care Record (PCR) audit, quality improvement and organisational learning.
The postholder will ensure appropriate systems are maintained to identify clinical risk, investigate incidents and concerns, monitor standards of care and demonstrate that learning and improvement actions are effectively implemented.

Role Responsibilities
- Provide organisation-wide leadership and management oversight of Bristol Ambulance’s clinical functions.
- Act as the principal clinical adviser to the Director of Operations and Senior Leadership Team.
- Maintain oversight of clinical practice, professional standards, clinical competence and standards of patient care across Bristol Ambulance services.
- Provide professional clinical advice and constructive challenge to operational managers and clinicians where patient safety or standards of care may be affected.
- Ensure clinical requirements are appropriately incorporated into operational planning, service delivery, mobilisation and service development.
- Support the introduction of new clinical practices, equipment, medicines, guidance and models of care.
- Maintain appropriate visibility across operational services and provide senior clinical support where required.
- Escalate significant clinical, professional or patient-safety concerns to the Director of Operations and through appropriate governance arrangements.
- Lead Bristol Ambulance’s patient safety and clinical governance arrangements.
- Maintain oversight of clinical incidents, patient-safety concerns, complaints, near misses and other matters requiring clinical review.
- Responsible for ensuring Bristol Ambulance maintains an effective programme of clinical audit and quality assurance across its services.
- Maintain appropriate clinical oversight of medicines-management arrangements across Bristol Ambulance. Ensure appropriate medicines and drug audits are undertaken and findings acted upon.
- Provide clinical leadership and management oversight of the Bristol Ambulance Training function, ensuring training activity reflects operational, clinical and regulatory requirements.
- Lead or support the development, review and implementation of clinical policies, procedures, guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.
- The Clinical Lead will act as the principal Bristol Ambulance interface with the relevant EMED Group corporate clinical, quality and patient safety teams.
- As the Clinical Lead role develops, the postholder may provide clinical support, professional advice and subject-matter expertise across the wider EMED Group, supporting the development and alignment of clinical standards across Group services.
- The Clinical Lead will provide effective leadership to clinical staff and functions within their area of responsibility and directly manage relevant clinical and governance roles.

Do you have what it takes?
- Hold appropriate driving qualifications where operational response duties form part of the role.
- Have an appropriate understanding of CQC requirements and healthcare regulatory frameworks.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of clinical governance, patient safety, incident investigation, clinical audit and quality improvement.
- Demonstrate the ability to interpret complex clinical, audit and performance information and translate findings into effective improvement actions.
- Maintain current HCPC registration as a Paramedic.
- Demonstrate substantial operational paramedic experience and experience of clinical leadership.
- Maintain appropriate clinical competence and continuing professional development.
- Work within applicable HCPC professional standards.
- Demonstrate effective leadership, management, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Have the ability to manage contractual relationships and external assurance processes.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality, integrity and independence of clinical judgement.
