Main Duties of the Job
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse to join our team as a full-time, permanent Band 7, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Diabetes. This post will be based at Southampton General Hospital, part of University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, however, cross-site working may be required.
We are looking for experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic nurses who have proven experience in the specialty of inpatient diabetes.
- You will have a major role in delivering excellent diabetes care to inpatients with opportunities to support in Continuous Insulin infusion devices (pump), maternal diabetes, and endocrine (alongside your fellow Band 7 team).
- You will be expected to work autonomously to develop and lead on a specialism within diabetes.
- You will act as a specialist resource and provide specialist advice in relation to the care of people with diabetes and provide a range of educational and training programs for the multidisciplinary team, patients, families, and carers.
- Support will be given to the post holders to develop their skills, experience, and competence in all spheres of diabetes nursing.
- The successful candidate will work across professional, departmental, and Trust boundaries as required to develop and support patient-centered seamless care, with particular responsibility for leading nurse-led care initiatives.
- The successful candidate will work alongside a team of Band 7s within the diabetes and endocrine service and line manage a small team of staff.

The service currently runs a Monday-Friday service, but weekend working may be an option in the future/as per service need. Flexible working hours can be considered but on-site working is essential in this patient-facing service.

Person Specification
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential Criteria
- Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register
- Level 7 Post Grad Cert (Min 60 Credits), Master’s Degree within relevant specialty or equivalent knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant specialty training, experience, or portfolio
- Specialist training/Qualification in the area of practice
- Provide evidence of leading learning in practice
- Evidence of experience and completion of all Band 6 competencies within the relevant specialty
- Specialist clinical skills and experience within the specialist area
- Evidence of change Management, leadership, and innovation
- Clinical experience at Band 6 or equivalent within the relevant specialty
- Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote learning in practice, providing an excellent learning environment for all
- Provide evidence of supporting/managing and supervision of a range of learnings in practice
Desirable Criteria
- Counselling/advanced communication skills qualification/training
- Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners/supporting challenges as needed
- Multidisciplinary team working
- Experience of nurse-led care/clinics in own practice
- Team leadership role
- Awareness of own leadership skills/style
- Registered as an independent prescriber
- Leadership Qualification/training
