Clinical Oncology - Consultant
An exciting opportunity is available for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in Gynaecological Oncology, with brachytherapy experience, to join an established and ambitious specialist team in South East England.
This is a permanent part-time position of up to 7 programmed activities (PAs). The on-call commitment can be negotiated, including the possibility of a role without on-call duties. The position can also be offered initially on a fixed-term contract, with the potential to transition to a permanent role.
Duties
The successful candidate will join an established team providing specialist gynaecological oncology care, supported by clinical nurse specialists and specialist trainees.
Main Duties
- Weekly gynaecological oncology outpatient clinics
- Gynaecological oncology operating sessions
- Rapid-access post-menopausal bleeding (PMB) clinics
- Colposcopy sessions
- Weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
- Specialist management of patients with gynaecological malignancies
- Participation in the wider multidisciplinary care of oncology patients
- Contribution to service development and clinical governance
- Teaching and training of junior doctors and other healthcare professionals
- Participation in audit, quality improvement and research activities

Surgical & Specialist Experience
The successful candidate should have extensive experience in the management of gynaecological malignancies and be competent in:
- Open surgery
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Vaginal surgery
- Management of acute gynaecological emergencies
- Specialist Gynaecological Oncology care
- Brachytherapy
The service also has an established robotic surgery programme, with opportunities for the successful candidate to contribute to its further development if interested.
The Team & Service
You will join a team of three Gynaecological Oncologists, including one part-time Consultant, supported by clinical nurse specialists and a subspecialty trainee.
The wider department comprises 25 Consultants providing general and specialist Obstetrics & Gynaecology services.
The service works collaboratively with other specialties, with regular multidisciplinary meetings and specialist input from colorectal, urology and radiology colleagues.
The department also provides clinical support across neighbouring services and participates in regional pathways for complex gynaecological cancer care.
Person Specification
Essential
- Full GMC registration
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of receiving CCT in Gynaecological Oncology
- MRCOG or equivalent approved by PMETB
- Completion of RCOG subspecialty training in Gynaecological Oncology, or equivalent
- Extensive experience in the laparoscopic and open surgical management of gynaecological oncology
- Extensive experience managing acute gynaecological emergencies
- BSCCP-accredited Colposcopist, or completed the required supervised cases and eligible for the OSCE examination
- Brachytherapy experience
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Leadership qualities
- Ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing service requirements
- Ability to function effectively under pressure and accept clinical responsibility

Desirable
- Experience in gynaecological ultrasound
- Experience developing clinical pathways, guidelines and policies
- Evidence of achieving change through clinical audit
- Experience in service management and resource management
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
- Ability to teach clinical and operative skills
- Training in basic research techniques and evaluation
- Ability to critically appraise research
- Experience contributing to service development
