Role Overview
The successful candidate will complete psychological assessments and provide statutory Educational Psychology-equivalent clinical advice to inform Education, Health and Care Plans, in line with the SEND Code of Practice 2015. This role suits a psychologist experienced in neurodevelopmental and complex needs assessment who is comfortable producing clear, defensible reports within statutory timeframes, and who can communicate effectively with schools, local authorities, and families.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake comprehensive psychological assessments of children and young people (0-25) as part of the EHC needs assessment process, in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 and SEND Code of Practice.
- Produce clear, high-quality written psychological advice for inclusion in EHCPs, meeting statutory timescales (typically within 6 weeks of referral).
- Assess a broad range of needs, including autism, ADHD, learning disability, social/emotional/mental health needs, and complex/co-occurring presentations.
- Select and administer appropriate standardised assessment tools (e.g. cognitive assessment, adaptive functioning measures) alongside clinical interview and observation.
- Liaise with schools, SENCOs, local authority SEND teams, families, and other professionals (speech & language therapy, occupational therapy, paediatrics) as part of a multi-disciplinary assessment process.
- Attend or contribute to EHCP review meetings, tribunals, or mediation processes as required, providing expert clinical opinion.
- Maintain accurate, timely case records and documentation in line with service and regulatory requirements.
- Work within safeguarding frameworks and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Participate in clinical supervision, CPD, and service quality assurance processes.

Essential Qualifications & Registration
- Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent, e.g. Educational Psychology doctorate where the role is EP-equivalent) from a BPS-accredited programme.
- Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist.
- Demonstrable experience conducting statutory assessments for EHC needs assessments, or directly transferable experience in neurodevelopmental/complex needs assessment for children and young people.
- Strong working knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice 2015 and the EHC needs assessment process.
- Up-to-date enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
- Current professional indemnity insurance appropriate to independent/contract practice, where applicable.
Desirable Criteria
- Chartered membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS).
- Experience providing expert evidence at SEND Tribunal.
- Experience working within a local authority SEND or Educational Psychology service.
- Specialist assessment experience in autism (e.g. ADOS-2) and/or ADHD (e.g. DIVA-5, QbTest).
- Experience working with looked-after children, or children with social care involvement.

- Strong communication skills, able to engage confidently with families, schools, and local authority professionals.
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage a caseload against firm statutory deadlines.
- Comfortable working autonomously, whether employed, sessional, or self-employed contractor.
- Committed to a child-centred, strengths-based approach to assessment.
