Job Description:

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Registered Care Home Manager with a nursing background and strong clinical expertise to lead our 30-bed care home.

This is a senior leadership position with overall responsibility for the day-to-day management, quality of care, clinical standards, regulatory compliance, staff leadership and overall performance of the home.

You will work closely with residents, relatives, nurses, care staff, GPs, community healthcare professionals and other external agencies to ensure residents receive safe, person-centred and high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities

Overall Management

  • Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day management and operation of the 30-bed care home.
  • Provide strong leadership to the nursing, care, administrative and support teams.
  • Ensure the home operates safely, effectively and in accordance with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop a positive culture focused on residents' wellbeing, dignity, choice and quality of life.
  • Manage staffing levels, rotas, recruitment, retention, supervision and performance.
  • Monitor the overall quality and effectiveness of services provided within the home.
  • Work closely with senior management and owners/directors to achieve the home's operational and quality objectives.

Clinical Leadership

  • Use your nursing expertise to provide strong clinical leadership across the home.
  • Oversee the delivery of high-quality nursing and personal care.
  • Ensure residents' clinical needs are appropriately assessed, monitored and managed.
  • Review complex care needs and ensure appropriate care plans and risk assessments are in place.
  • Provide clinical guidance to nurses and care staff.
  • Ensure appropriate escalation and management of changes in residents' health conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, district nurses, pharmacists, community teams and other healthcare professionals.
  • Promote evidence-based and person-centred approaches to care.

Dementia, Elderly and Complex Care

  • Ensure high standards of dementia and Alzheimer's care.
  • Oversee care for residents with complex physical and mental health needs.
  • Ensure appropriate management of falls, nutrition and hydration, pressure care, mobility and other clinical risks.
  • Support appropriate end-of-life and palliative care.
  • Work sensitively with residents and families during periods of deterioration or end-of-life care.
  • Ensure residents' preferences, wishes and individual needs are reflected in their care.

Medication and Clinical Governance

  • Oversee safe medication management and administration.
  • Ensure appropriate medication policies, procedures and audits are followed.
  • Monitor clinical incidents, accidents, safeguarding concerns, complaints and other areas of risk.
  • Ensure appropriate investigations and corrective actions are completed.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.
  • Ensure accurate clinical documentation and record keeping.
  • Lead and monitor clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure the care home consistently meets applicable regulatory and statutory requirements.
  • Maintain strong systems for governance, quality assurance and risk management.
  • Prepare for and manage regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Ensure identified improvements are implemented and monitored.
  • Maintain accurate records, policies and procedures.
  • Promote a culture of transparency, accountability and continuous improvement.

Staff Leadership and Development

  • Lead, motivate and develop the nursing and care teams.
  • Ensure staff receive appropriate induction, training, supervision and competency assessments.
  • Develop a strong culture of teamwork, professionalism and accountability.
  • Address performance and conduct issues appropriately.
  • Ensure staff understand their clinical responsibilities and maintain appropriate professional standards.
  • Encourage continuous professional development.

Residents and Families

  • Maintain strong relationships with residents and their families.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to concerns and complaints.
  • Promote dignity, independence, choice and respect.
  • Ensure residents are actively involved in decisions about their care.
  • Create a welcoming, safe and homely environment.

Essential Requirements

  • Registered Nurse with current professional registration.
  • Significant experience working within nursing, elderly care, care home or healthcare environments.
  • Previous experience in a senior management or Registered Manager position.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and confidence in managing complex resident care.
  • Experience managing and leading nursing and care teams.
  • Strong understanding of dementia and Alzheimer's care.
  • Experience with medication management, care planning and clinical governance.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, infection prevention, health and safety and risk management.
  • Experience managing incidents, complaints and clinical concerns.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements applicable to care homes.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with residents, families, staff and external healthcare professionals.
  • A compassionate, visible and hands-on leadership approach.

Desirable

  • Previous experience managing a nursing home or larger care home.
  • Experience with regulatory inspections and compliance.
  • Experience in elderly, dementia, complex or palliative care.
  • Experience managing clinical audits and quality improvement.
  • Relevant management or leadership qualification.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary community healthcare teams.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a Registered Nurse first and an experienced manager, with the clinical credibility to lead a nursing and care team and the management ability to run the home effectively.

You should be confident making clinical decisions, managing risk, supporting staff, dealing with families and external professionals, and ensuring the home consistently provides safe, compassionate and high-quality care.
