Clinical Scientist - Radiotherapy Physics
South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Job Summary
The Radiotherapy Physics section of the Department of Medical Physics at The James Cook University Hospital has a vacancy for a Clinical Scientist.
The successful candidate will possess a good knowledge of the radiotherapy process and will contribute to routine clinical service delivery and the development of new techniques and technologies across all areas of the service.
The department serves a population of 1 million people. It is equipped with 6 Elekta linacs, two Siemens CT scanners, a Fleixtron brachytherapy unit and will soon be installing a new kV unit. The hardware base is complemented by Mosaiq OIS, Monaco & Raystation and Prosoma virtual simulation software systems. AI tools are increasingly used as part of the department's work and we have ambitions to deliver online adaptive radiotherapy in the future.
Main duties of the job
The radiotherapy physics team consists of physicists, mould room technologists, engineers, IT specialists and others. We construct a supportive and engaging atmosphere for qualified and competent individuals to thrive in. Newly qualified staff are required to go through a preceptorship programme which introduces individuals to the trust and runs through our QA, planning and imaging competencies.
Applicants for this post should be HCPC Registered as a Clinical Scientist or in a position to achieve registration within 12 months.
We also welcome applications from exceptional individuals able to achieve registration via ACS route 2 within 3 years. Appointment would be under AFC annex 21 rules, following a structured training plan leading to HCPC registration.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
