Job Overview
We are looking for a Band 3 Therapy Support Worker to join the Emergency and Medical Therapy team, on a permanent basis.
The post holder will work alongside members of the team to provide both physiotherapy and occupational therapy for patients on a number of medical wards including Respiratory, Cardiology, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology. They will also support the “front door” team covering the Emergency Department, Medical Assessment Unit and Short Stay ward when needed. The post holder will also have a number of non-clinical/ administrative tasks to support the team and wider Therapies Department.
This post is suitable for anyone with experience in healthcare or working with the public and who would like to develop their career in an acute hospital environment.
The department has a positive approach to continuing professional development and there is an active in-service training programme.

Main duties of the job
- Assist the occupational therapists and physiotherapists in assessing and treating patients.
- Have responsibility for managing a delegated caseload of medical patients with supervision, providing support and treatment to patients.
- Work flexibly to support the whole Medical Therapy team, working closely with both Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, working with patients on the Respiratory, Cardiac, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Medical Short Stay ward.
- Perform housekeeping, maintenance, clerical and administration duties to comply with the needs and priorities of the departments concerned.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- Provide occupational therapy/physiotherapy treatment prescribed by the therapist to patients, to include the teaching of transfer techniques, exercises mobility and walking re-education.
- Assist the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in the rehabilitation of patients using a range of delegated exercises or treatments.
- Be competent in the measurement, provision and teaching of walking aids.
- Undertake functional activities of daily livings with patients as part of their treatment plan such as self-care and domestic tasks, that have been delegated to you.
- Undertake any other duties delegated by the therapist which are within the post holder’s capabilities.
- Monitor/change patient’s programmes, note this progress and report back to therapist.
- Take an active role in the planning of patient’s treatment programmes and contribute to discharge planning of medical patients working closely with qualified therapist colleagues.
- Instruct patients and carers, provide direction and guidance to achieve activities assessed as being necessary by the therapist.
- Encourage patients and carers in an active approach to regaining or maintaining personal independence.
- Ensure the care and safety of the patients in the treatment area.
- Manage clinical risk within own patient work load.
- Work with minimum supervision when required.
- Participate as a full member of the MDT and report relevant information to other members of the team in close liaison with the therapist.

Person specification
Education
Essential criteria
- Education to GCSE level
Desirable criteria
- Relevant qualification e.g. NVQ, BTEC, care certificate or degree.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Competent IT skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with patients or the general public
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates an understanding of occupational therapy and physiotherapy in the acute setting.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
