SURGICAL ADMISSIONS UNIT
1 x Part time Permanent Post (24.0 hours per week)
Awarded Diamond accreditation by UTAQC, we are looking for a clinical support worker with suitable ward experience or willing to learn the role of clinical support worker to work within our busy Surgical Admissions Unit. The successful applicant will work within our Surgical Admissions Units at The James Cook University Hospital and One Life. We have 3 units across the 2 sites.
Post holders will be appointed at band 2 or band 3 depending upon qualifications.
Band 2 requirements
- Willingness to undertake all relevant training and qualifications if wishing to develop into a band 3 role.
Band 3 requirements
- Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or GCSE equivalent (A-C/ 4-9)
- Care certificate
- Level 3 vocational qualification
or
Short courses and completion of competency workbook equivalent to Level 3 in a range of patient and clinical care duties
and/or
Equivalent knowledge and experience in a range of clinical care duties equivalent to Level 3;
- Theoretical knowledge
- Experience of a range of care and related procedures
- Clinical observations
- Knowledge of relevant legislation
There is a clear framework to allow for postholders to develop from a band 2 to band 3 and this includes completion of the qualifications.

The successful applicant will be working within the Surgical Admissions Unit portfolio assisting and caring for patients undergoing surgery. This will entail admitting the patients for their surgery, caring for them post operatively and discharging them home when safe.
The role of a clinical support worker higher level within the Surgical Admissions Unit is a specialised and extremely interesting and rewarding role. As a support worker you will be directly impacting on the quality of care we provide to patients undergoing a surgical procedure.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Managing the relationship with the patient and the provision of appropriate information to them, ensuring that exceptional customer service is delivered.
- Working with other clinical staff, including clinicians, to ensure optimal patient flow, including assisting them if required.
- Admitting patients for their surgery.
- Monitoring and recording baseline clinical observations.
- Venepuncture.
- Urinalysis.
- Caring for patients post operatively.
- Assisting with ensuring that clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the nurse in charge.
- Ensure the sharps bins are secure and ready for collection.
- Assisting in cleaning all equipment and storing it safely.
- Attend and participate in team meetings, briefings and debriefings as required.
