Company Description
Working as a partnership, both Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust have a shared vision for excellence in care for our patients and communities; with a set of strategic aims underpinning how we will achieve this.
The single corporate service is delivered across both organizations. You may be based at either IWT or PHU and individuals may be required to undertake business travel between sites. For leaders managing staff across multi-site locations, you will need to be visible and provide in-person leadership. The arrangements and frequency will be agreed locally.
Job Description
NHS Band 5 Salary: £32,073 - £39,043 per annum
Hours Per Week: Full-time 37.5
Contract Type: Temporary(12 Months Maternity Cover)
Location Base: St Mary's Hospital, Parkhurst Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 5TG
Are you an experienced IT Service Desk or Support Engineer looking to take the next step in your healthcare IT career?
We are looking for a tech-savvy problem solver with strong foundational IT skills to join our Digital Service Desk team. In this role, you will provide vital 2nd-line support for the core clinical applications that keep Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust running smoothly.
No prior clinical systems experience? Don't worry, full specialist training will be provided!
If you have strong general IT troubleshooting skills, great customer service, and an eagerness to learn, we will teach you the clinical systems on the job.
What You’ll Be Doing
Working as part of a collaborative digital team, you will ensure our frontline healthcare staff have reliable access to essential patient-care applications:
- 2nd-Line Support: Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve system issues escalated from the Service Desk, working with 3rd-party software suppliers when needed.
- System Configuration: Maintain and update core system master files to support changing trust workflows and NHS reporting standards.
- Data Quality & Improvement: Identify data anomalies, work with departmental managers to fix root causes, and partner with Digital Trainers to keep staff supported.
- Continuous Learning: Develop specialist expertise across key hospital systems (PAS, EPR, Digital Dictation, and e-Consent tools).

What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Core IT Experience: Proven background in IT Service Desk, Desktop Support, or Application Support.
- Technical Aptitude: Strong troubleshooting mindset with the ability to quickly pick up new software and system workflows.
- Problem-Solving & Communication: Great customer service skills, able to translate technical speak for busy clinical staff.
- Education / Background: Degree in an IT/business-related subject OR equivalent hands-on relevant IT support experience.
Desirable
- ITIL Foundation certification.
- Basic understanding or prior exposure to NHS systems (e.g., PAS, EPR, ICE) or healthcare data standards.

Qualifications
- Degree in IT or business-related subject or equivalent relevant experience
- ITIL Foundation
- Knowledge of business process documentation techniques

Experience
- Application incident and problem management skills
- Understanding of NHS data standards and NHS data items
- Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
- Significant experience of multiple information Systems gained in a work environment
Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of specific healthcare/clinical related applications such as PAS (Patient Administration System), EPR (Electronic Patient Record), and eReferrals
- Knowledge of business change process analysis and design techniques
- Evidence of reflection and evaluation of knowledge and skill gaps
