About Reach Out for Mental Health
Reach Out for Mental Health (ROFMH) is a suicide prevention service operating in Essex set up to reduce the number of attempted and completed suicides in the area. We're looking for amazing people to join our board of mavericks.

This is an exciting time for Reach Out for Mental Health as we expand our services and explore bold new ways to support people across Essex who are struggling with their mental health. You’ll be stepping into a charity that’s not afraid to challenge norms and pioneer an alternative, trailblazing approach to suicide prevention.
As a Trustee, you won’t just be sitting around a table. You’ll be part of a movement – helping shape the future of grassroots mental health support.

What are we looking for?
We’re looking for someone who can bring strong knowledge and experience of counselling, psychotherapy or therapeutic services to our Board.
You might be a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist, clinical lead, counselling service manager, supervisor, lecturer or someone with significant experience of developing or overseeing counselling services. Experience of working with student counsellors or counselling placements would be particularly valuable as we expand this area of our work.

Our ideal Trustee will:
- Have a good understanding of counselling or therapeutic practice and the standards that underpin safe, ethical and effective services.
- Understand the opportunities and challenges involved in delivering counselling services, ideally within a charity, community or voluntary-sector setting.
- Be able to contribute to the strategic development of our existing counselling provision, our expanding student placement programme and our new low-cost counselling service.
- Bring an understanding of clinical governance, safeguarding, boundaries, risk and quality assurance within therapeutic services.
- Be confident asking questions, offering constructive challenge and sharing their professional knowledge while respecting the distinction between governance and operational management.
- Be collaborative, compassionate, open-minded and comfortable being part of an organisation that is willing to try new approaches.
- Share our commitment to providing accessible, non-judgemental support to adults experiencing suicidal thoughts.
The most important thing for us is relevant therapeutic or counselling experience combined with the ability to think strategically at Board level. Previous trustee experience isn't essential; we can support someone who is new to trusteeship.
Above all, we're looking for someone who understands that behind every policy, service model and set of figures is a person who deserves to feel heard, respected and supported.

What will you be doing?
Trustee – Counselling & Therapeutic Services
Reach Out for Mental Health is looking for a new, dynamic and compassionate Trustee to join our Board, bringing experience and understanding of counselling, therapy or the delivery of counselling services.
We provide free counselling and other forms of support to adults experiencing suicidal thoughts across Essex, and our counselling services are an important part of what we do. As we continue to grow and develop, we want someone on our Board who understands the therapeutic world and can bring that knowledge to our governance, strategy and decision-making.

You might be a qualified or experienced counsellor or psychotherapist, a clinical lead, counselling service manager, supervisor, or someone who has been involved in developing or overseeing therapeutic services. You don't necessarily need to be practising now – we're interested in the knowledge, experience and perspective you can bring.
You'll help the Board ask the right questions, understand good therapeutic practice and provide constructive challenge and support as our counselling provision develops.
We're not a charity that is afraid to do things differently. We want Trustees who are curious, compassionate and willing to challenge the status quo; people who can bring their professional experience without losing sight of the human beings behind policies, procedures and statistics.
There are some particularly exciting developments ahead. We’re preparing to launch a new low-cost counselling service, helping make longer-term therapeutic support more accessible while also creating a sustainable source of income for the charity. We’re also expanding our student counselling placement provision, giving more trainee counsellors the opportunity to develop their skills while increasing the support available to our community.
We’d love our new Trustee to bring their experience and ideas to the Board as we shape and develop these services for the future.
You would be joining Reach Out at an exciting time as we continue to strengthen our existing counselling provision and explore how therapeutic services can develop sustainably in the future.
