We are ambitious to expand services and establish Royal Derby Hospital as a centre for Vascular Science excellence in teaching and research. Your role would support normal operations alongside developing our research and training capacity. You would liaise with different services within the team as well as at Trust level to include research and audit.
Our Team
Our current team consists of a Lead Clinical Vascular Scientist, an experienced Vascular Physiologist, and three experienced locum Clinical Vascular Scientists - housed within the wider and friendly Clinical Measurement team in Royal Derby Hospital. We have two Philips EPIQ Elite ultrasound machines in dedicated air-conditioned rooms, with a portable Philips Affiniti 70 for attending wards and TIA Clinic.
Ideal Applicant
The ideal applicant will be a CSVS Accredited Vascular Scientist or an experienced Vascular Science STP graduate, however experienced Vascular Sonographers and recent graduates of the STP & other CASE-Accredited Vascular Ultrasound/Science courses are encouraged to apply. Consideration would be given to candidates who may require additional training and support with the possibility of a developmental Band 6 to Band 7 post.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Responsibilities
Having a proven track record, you will be expected to perform a wide range of vascular investigations, including carotid and temporal artery scans, upper and lower limb arterial and venous duplex scans, AAA and graft surveillance scans. Having the ability to independently report your own scans as well as being able to review and comment on the scans of others is an important part of the role. Non-imaging tests such as ABPI are also performed. In addition, you will also be expected to provide teaching, audit and supervisory support. We actively encourage continuous professional development within the dept.
The vascular ultrasound service is expanding to provide vascular imaging services to other hospitals within the Trust; cross-site working is already in place for many of our other specialties therefore this is also predicted for vascular ultrasound. This post will also involve some weekend on-call work on a rota basis, providing imaging for the 7 day TIA service.
In addition, you will also be expected to provide teaching, participate in research, audit and supervisory support.
Cross-site working is already in place for many of our other specialties within the department; we have ambitions for the vascular ultrasound service to follow suit at some point.
