Psychological Professional Acute Services

Band 8a | Band 7 development opportunity | Full-time or part-time considered

Bring psychological thinking to the heart of acute mental health care

Are you a Clinical, Counselling Psychologist, or a Psychotherapist with a core profession looking for a role where your expertise can make a real difference at some of the most important points in people's crisis and recovery?

Would you like to work in a service where psychological thinking is valued within the MDT, where you can develop your expertise in acute care, and where there are genuine opportunities to contribute to service development, research and the wider profession?

We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled and committed Psychological Professional to join our Acute Psychology Service, working across inpatient wards and the Home Treatment Team.

This is a varied and rewarding role for someone who enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues, brings curiosity and compassion to complex presentations, and wants to influence care beyond the therapy room.

A role where you can make a difference

As a Psychological Professional within Acute Services, you will help bring formulation-led, evidence-based psychological practice into crisis and acute care.

You Will Have Opportunities To

  • Develop and promote psychological formulation to inform care planning, risk management and clinical decision-making.
  • Provide psychological assessment and brief, evidence-based interventions for people experiencing acute mental health difficulties.
  • Contribute to collaborative risk assessment and management, including team based risk formulation.
  • Strengthen psychological thinking and skills across the MDT through consultation, training, supervision and reflective practice.
  • Work closely with partner services to support effective discharge planning and continuity of care.
  • Contribute to service evaluation, audit, quality improvement and wider service development.
  • Develop your clinical leadership skills and influence the way psychological care is delivered across acute pathways.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Your development matters

Although this post is offered at Band 8a, we are very happy to consider applications from Band 7 clinicians seeking a development opportunity.

For the right candidate, we can develop a tailored job plan reflecting your existing competencies, experience and development goals. This could provide an excellent opportunity to build towards Band 8a level practice while gaining valuable experience in acute mental health services.

The Acute and Rehab Psychology (ARD Psychology) Service is a dynamic team of psychological professionals working across crisis and acute settings, including Home Treatment Crisis Teams, psychiatric inpatient wards and other areas of acute mental health care.

We are proud of the contribution our team has made to the development of psychological practice in acute and inpatient services. Team members have been involved in national guidance, research, studies and publications, including contributing to the BPS/ACP-UK guidance for psychological services in acute adult mental health settings.

We are keen to build on this work and welcome people who want to contribute to the development of best practice, research and the evidence base for psychological work in acute care.

We are passionate about tackling health and social inequalities and making psychological care accessible to everyone. Our team works hard to create welcoming and inclusive spaces for people from marginalised communities, ensuring that psychological practice recognises the wider social and cultural contexts in which people live.

We are committed to supporting the professional development of our staff through regular CPD and opportunities to broaden clinical expertise. Subject to funding and service requirements, there may also be opportunities to access further training in approaches such as Systemic Family Therapy, EMDR and CBT for psychosis.
