Cloud Platform Engineer

About the Role

Join NEC Software Solutions (NEC SW), a leading provider of critical software solutions for government, healthcare, and public services, and make a tangible impact in such sectors as emergency response, public transport, and social care.

Reports to: Cloud Platform & Services Operations Manager Team: Cloud Platform Engineering Location Requirements: Location unspecified (likely UK/UK-based)

Core Responsibilities

In this hands-on technical role, you will:

Cloud Platform Foundations

  • Build and maintain cloud landing zones, account/subscription structures, and baseline configurations.
  • Establish and manage shared platform services, including:
    • Network hubs
    • Identity integrations
    • Management groups
  • Ensure scalability, reliability, and security across multi-regional deployments.

Security & Identity Management

  • Design and enforce cloud IAM policies and role-based access control (RBAC).
  • Integrate federated identity solutions and automate user provisioning workflows.
  • Implement principles of least privilege, compliance controls, and audit readiness.

Cloud Networking

  • Develop and maintain cloud network architectures:
    • Virtual Networks (VNets / VPCs), subnets, and networking policies
    • Internal/external DNS integration
    • Firewall & gateway configurations
  • Support secure connectivity solutions, including:
    • Hub-and-spoke topologies
    • Private transit/VPN or direct links (ExpressRoute/VPN)
    • On-premises-to-cloud connectivity

Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

  • Design, develop, and maintain Terraform templates and reusable modules.
  • Optimise IaC workflows for consistency, maintainability, and reusability.
  • Collaborate with CI/CD pipelines to ensure automated cloud platform delivery.

Platform Automation & Tooling

  • Contribute to internal platform tooling and automation scripts (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
  • Enhance self-service capabilities for teams deploying workloads.
  • Integrate monitoring, alerting, and observability tracking.

Operational Support (Business as Usual - BAU)

  • Diurnally maintain cloud platforms:
    • Patch management
    • Service upgrades
    • Troubleshooting incidents and platform support requests
  • Support new cloud environments/accounts to scale workload deployment.

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Maintain up-to-date technical specifications, runbooks, and architectural patterns.
  • Work closely with Security, FinOps, and Platform Services teams to embed governance standards.

  • Stand-up and iterate landing zones, IaC pipelines, and networking configurations.
  • Respond to platform incidents and support requests under strict SLA.
  • Perform preventative/remedial maintenance (e.g., permission rehydration, policy updates).

Duties Under Project/Change Work

  • Research and implement new platform features (e.g., hybrid network extensions).
  • Drive process optimisations to improve:
    • Self-service developer experience.
    • CI/CD pipeline efficiency.
  • Refactor components for better security, resiliency, and cost optimisation.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Technical Proficiency

  • Intermediate to advanced certification in:
    • AWS, Azure, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) (beyond fundamental certifications only).
  • Eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC or NPPV Level 3/above).

Required Experience

☑ Public cloud expertise (AWS, Azure, or OCI) mandatory. ☑ Experience with IaC, specifically Terraform, in multi-account/environment environments. ☑ Comfortable with core networking models:

  • Routing protocols (BGP isolation, network segmentation).
  • Federated identities (SAML/ADFS OAuth/OIDC). ☑ Familiarity with CI/CD toolchains:
  • Azure Pipelines, GitHub Actions, Terraform Cloud, or similar. ☑ Soft skills:
  • Strong problem-solving focus with DevOps/Platform Engineering mindset.
  • Ability to translate architectural guidelines to code.

Nice-to-have experience

  • Enterprise network environments (firewalls, VPN/ExpressRoute/Direct Connect, high-availability designs).
  • Windows Server/Active Directory integration, patching, and hardening practices.
  • Unix/Linux systems administration (RHEL, Ubuntu, etc.) and configuration management.
  • Kubernetes experience (Azure AKS, AWS EKS, or on-premise clusters).
  • Monitoring & Observability with:
    • Azure Monitor, CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, SolarWinds, ManageEngine, etc.
