CMM Operator / Inspector

Gateshead
£21.90 per hour + Shift Allowance (+29.25%) + Overtime (x1.5)
Full Time | Permanent/Temporary/FTC

The Opportunity

An established and highly respected precision engineering manufacturer is seeking an experienced CMM Operator / Inspector to join its quality team in Newcastle upon Tyne. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled inspection professional to work within a modern machining environment, ensuring precision-engineered components meet exacting customer, quality, and engineering standards. The successful candidate will play a key role in quality assurance activities, supporting production teams while helping maintain industry-leading inspection standards.

The Role

Working as part of a collaborative quality function, the successful candidate will be responsible for the programming and operation of Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), conducting dimensional inspections, and ensuring all manufactured components comply with engineering drawings and customer specifications.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Programming and operating CMM equipment using MCOSMOS software.
  • Performing dimensional inspections on precision-machined components and assemblies.
  • Using a range of precision measuring instruments to verify product conformity.
  • Interpreting engineering drawings, tolerances, GD&T requirements, and surface finish specifications.
  • Recording, analysing, and reporting inspection results accurately.
  • Identifying and investigating non-conformances and quality issues.
  • Maintaining inspection records in line with quality system requirements.
  • Liaising closely with manufacturing and quality teams to ensure product compliance.
  • Supporting the training and development of colleagues through knowledge sharing and best practice.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement activities across quality and inspection processes.
  • Demonstrating flexibility to support customer demands through additional hours when required.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate will have previous experience within a CNC machining, manufacturing, or precision engineering environment and possess strong metrology and inspection expertise.

Applicants should have:

  • Previous experience as a CMM Operator / Inspector.
  • Proven experience programming and operating CMM equipment using MCOSMOS software.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings, tolerances, GD&T, and surface finish requirements.
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment including:
    • Micrometers
    • Vernier calipers
    • Plug gauges
    • Screw plug gauges
    • Ring gauges
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A positive, proactive, and flexible approach to work.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within highly regulated manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, defence, oil & gas, power generation, or precision engineering.
  • Previous mentoring or training experience.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and quality management systems.

Working Hours

The successful candidate will work a variety of shift patterns, including night shifts. Night shifts attract a 29.25% shift allowance. Regular overtime opportunities are available and paid at 1.5x the basic hourly rate.
