CNC Machinist – Sheffield
Salary: £36,870 – £38,313 per annum (including shift allowance)
About the Role
Progress Rail Services UK is recruiting a CNC Machinist to operate CNC Milling Machines, producing machined components efficiently, safely, and within production deadlines and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
As a CNC Machinist, you will:
- Operate CNC milling machines to produce quality components
- Follow route cards, SOPs, and engineering drawings meticulously
- Use a Dial Test Indicator (DTI) for probing and setup
- Load the correct NC programs and tooling for each job
- Operate overhead cranes (training provided if required)
- Perform inspections using gauges, measuring instruments, or templates
- Adjust machine parameters as needed during setup
- Dry-run and test new or modified NC programs
- Record work using SFDC system (direct/indirect time tracking)
- Report issues related to manufacturing instructions or documentation to supervisors
- Conduct self-inspection of produced parts and resolve quality defects

Location & Working Hours
Flexible shift patterns available, including:
Option 1: 3 Shifts
- Days: Monday to Thursday (06:00–13:40), Friday (06:00–13:00)
- Afters: Monday to Thursday (13:35–21:15), Friday (12:55–19:55)
- Nights: Monday to Thursday (21:10–06:05)
Option 2: 2 Shifts
- Days: Monday to Thursday (06:00–15:15)
- Afters: Monday to Thursday (15:00–00:30)
The Ideal Candidate
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Proven experience in manufacturing (medium-to-heavy environment preferred)
- CNC milling experience (no primer)
- Ability to read engineering drawings
- Awareness of safety legislation and ISO 9001 quality procedures
- Strong attention to detail
Desirable Attributes
- Previous experience with Fanuc, Heidenheim, or Siemens CNC systems
