£32k - £45k | Hertfordshire | Full-Time, On-Site
We're growing our sliding head cell and we're looking for someone who knows their way around a Swiss-type lathe.
This is a hands-on production role at AFT Fluorotec's main manufacturing site in Welwyn Garden City. You'll be working on precision components machined from PTFE and engineering plastics, on a cell that's expanding and well-invested.
What the role involves
Setting, operating and programming sliding head machines to produce precision components to tight tolerances. You'll work from engineering drawings, carry out first-off and in-process inspection, optimise cycle times and troubleshoot as the job demands. Documentation matters here too. We operate to AS9100D standards, so quality records are part of the role.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we're looking for
Genuine sliding head (Swiss-type) experience is the non-negotiable. Beyond that, we're open on level (operator, setter or programmer) and we'll consider both CNC and cam backgrounds.
Strong candidates will have:
- Setting experience as a minimum; programming (conversational or CAD/CAM) is a real plus
- Confidence working across different machine sizes
- The ability to read and work accurately from engineering drawings
- A disciplined, quality-first approach on the shop floor
Experience machining plastics rather than metals is a genuine advantage and aerospace or AS9100D experience is a bonus.
