I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Machinery & Controls
The site operates XYZ Proturn lathes with ProtoTRAK programming controls, including:
- 3 x XYZ Proturn 410 Series.
- 1 x XYZ RLX 555 Touchscreen.
Previous XYZ Proturn / ProtoTRAK experience would be highly advantageous, particularly as the business is looking for somebody capable of becoming productive quickly.
However, we would also be interested in speaking with experienced CNC Turners who have strong programming, setting and operating experience on other controls and have the machining knowledge and capability to adapt.
Most of the existing CNC team can both mill and turn, so experience across both would be advantageous. However, the business is equally happy to consider a dedicated CNC Turner where their turning competence and capability are strong.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong CNC turning experience.
- Confident programming, setting and operating CNC lathes.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience working from engineering drawings.
- Good knowledge of tooling and machining processes.
- Strong understanding of tolerances and component inspection.
- XYZ Proturn / ProtoTRAK experience highly advantageous.
- Milling Experience Advantageous But Not Essential.
- Reliable with a strong work ethic.
- Capable of taking responsibility for your own workload.
- Someone who can set a positive example to younger/developing members of the team.
