Coded Welder / Fabricator - Motor Vehicle / Automotive - Cambridge - £37.5k to £52k
Location: Burwell, Cambridgeshire
Salary: £37,440 – £52,000 per annum (£18ph to £25ph)
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm
Overtime: Available
Annual Leave: 22 days + 8 Bank Holidays + your birthday off

About the Company
Our client is a specialist British engineering and manufacturing business based near Cambridge, designing and manufacturing highly engineered vehicles, equipment and mechanical systems for demanding applications.
Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint an experienced Coded Welder / Fabricator to join their manufacturing team in Burwell.
This is a hands-on workshop position working on high-quality, safety-critical fabricated components and assemblies. You'll work from engineering drawings and approved welding procedures, taking responsibility for producing accurate, structurally sound work to the required quality standards.
The Role
As a Coded Welder / Fabricator, you'll carry out welding, fabrication, fitting and finishing activities across a variety of structural and mechanical components.
Quality is a major part of the position. You'll be expected to work accurately to engineering drawings, weld symbols, specifications and tolerances while ensuring finished components meet the required standards before progressing to the next stage of manufacture.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out MIG/MAG welding and other specified welding processes in accordance with approved procedures.
- Fabricate structural and mechanical components and assemblies from engineering drawings.
- Interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, specifications and tolerances accurately.
- Prepare, fit, tack and weld components prior to final welding.
- Complete welding on structural, mechanical and fabricated assemblies.
- Carry out grinding, dressing, cleaning and finishing operations where required.
- Check dimensions, alignment, weld appearance and overall workmanship throughout the fabrication process.
- Ensure completed work meets required quality and safety standards.
- Identify and report defects, discrepancies and non-conforming materials or components.
- Carry out authorised rework of defective welds or assemblies where required.
- Maintain the integrity and traceability required when manufacturing safety-critical products and equipment.
- Work closely with fabrication, machining, assembly, engineering and quality teams.
- Minimise rework, scrap and unnecessary material usage.
- Maintain welding equipment and ensure tools and machinery are operated correctly.
- Follow all company health & safety procedures, risk assessments and hot-work requirements.
- Correctly use PPE, extraction equipment and other safety controls.
- Maintain a clean, organised workshop in line with 5S principles.
- Contribute ideas to improve welding processes, quality, productivity and workplace organisation.

Experience & Skills
We're looking for someone with strong practical welding and fabrication experience who is comfortable working within a professional engineering/manufacturing environment.
You should have:
- Previous professional experience as a Welder, Coded Welder, Fabricator/Welder or similar.
- Strong MIG/MAG welding experience.
- Experience fabricating structural and/or mechanical components.
- Ability to confidently read and interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols.
- Good understanding of fabrication tolerances and dimensional accuracy.
- Knowledge of metals and their properties during welding and heat processes.
- Ability to inspect your own work and maintain consistently high standards.
- Experience using and maintaining welding and fabrication equipment.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when working on safety-critical components.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a wider manufacturing team.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work to production deadlines.

Qualifications
Ideally, you'll hold a current recognised welding code/certification alongside relevant industry qualifications such as ISO/BS welding certification, City & Guilds, NVQ or equivalent.
Not currently coded? Candidates with strong welding and fabrication experience will still be considered, with the opportunity for the business to provide training and support to achieve the required coding.

- £37,440 – £52,000 basic salary (£18–£25 per hour).
