An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly skilled and experienced Specialist Teachers of Cognition and Learning to join Leicestershire’s Specialist Teaching Service. These new posts within the expanding Learning, Communication and Autism Team will play a central role in supporting the delivery of SEND reforms and the Experts at Hand programme, helping schools build capacity and improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND across Leicestershire.
We are looking for qualified teachers with strong expertise in cognition and learning and a secure understanding of how these needs may interact with other areas of SEND, including communication and interaction, SEMH and sensory needs.
About the Role
We are a welcoming and well-regarded team of Specialist Teachers with extensive knowledge, experience and a passion for inclusion. As part of the Specialist Teaching Service, we work with families, educational settings and partner organisations to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND.
Successful applicants will support learners aged 5 to 19 with cognition and learning needs, helping schools and post-16 settings develop inclusive practice and improve outcomes within the evolving Experts at Hand model. The role involves providing specialist assessment, advice, consultation, training and support to school staff, as well as assisting with the implementation and evaluation of evidence-informed interventions.
You will manage a caseload, working closely with families, schools and other professionals to identify needs, monitor progress and contribute to Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments, annual reviews and other statutory processes. The role also includes maintaining accurate records, contributing to service development, creating resources and engaging in ongoing professional development.
We are seeking motivated, collaborative practitioners with strong knowledge of the National Curriculum, cognition and learning needs, and effective SEND provision.
An enhanced with barred list DBS check is required for this post.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
