I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

The Museum of Anaesthesia
The Museum of Anaesthesia grew out of A. Charles King’s private collection of historic anaesthetic apparatus, which he donated to the Association of Anaesthetists in 1953. The collection has since grown to include nearly 5,000 objects, 1,000 archive documents, and 7,000 library items. Objects span the entire history of the profession and tell the story of modern anaesthesia from its earliest beginnings in the 1840s, to technological advancements, and its use in war and childbirth. The Museum of Anaesthesia is housed in the Association of Anaesthetist’s headquarters at 21 Portland Place, where it has a purpose-built exhibition gallery that tells the story of the history of anaesthesia.
Role Description
The Collections Officer will lead on the collections management, documentation, and care of the Museum of Anaesthesia's object, library, and archive collections. This is a fixed-term role created to deliver a defined set of time-limited projects, such as completing the Museum's re-accreditation application, overseeing the collections move to new off-site storage, implementing the recommendations of a grant-funded collections care audit, progressing a digitisation exercise with Axiell, and coordinating the Museum's next temporary exhibition. By delivering these projects, the post holder will help preserve the history of anaesthesia and make it accessible for all. Once these deliverables are complete, the fixed-term need for this post will end.
This is a part-time, 3 days per week role based at our head office in 21 Portland Place, London, on a 12-month contract. We offer a hybrid working arrangement with a minimum of one day in the office per week for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead completion of the Museum's re-accreditation application, targeted for submission in January 2027.
- Oversee the collections move, commencing January 2027, including planning, logistics, and post-move storage arrangements.
- Take forward the recommendations of the grant-funded collections care audit, a piece of work expected to take 6+ months, run alongside and following the collections move.
- Liaise with Axiell, the Museum's database provider, to complete a digitisation exercise.
- Coordinate and arrange the Museum's next temporary exhibition and associated engagement events, with the exhibition launching in April/May 2027.
- Design and deliver the Museum’s contribution to the Association’s new event, GasFest, in September 2027.
- All aspects of collections' management and documentation, in line with agreed policies and procedures, including acquisition, registration, cataloguing, deaccessioning, digitisation, environmental control, loan processing, insurance, records digitisation, storage maintenance (on and off site), and information retrieval in response to research requests.
- All aspects of collections' care, in line with agreed policies and procedures, including emergency preparedness strategy, security, integrated pest management, environmental monitoring and control, housekeeping procedures, building management systems, and routine checks of properties.
- Recruit and train collections volunteers and develop the current museum team in collections management.
- Write or contribute to funding applications, proposals, and strategic plans.
