The Commercial Assistant Opportunity

Laing O'Rourke are currently recruiting a Commercial Assistant to join our team in Birmingham.

We have been appointed as construction partner for National Grid's Great Grid Partnership programme, which forms part of a supply chain framework supporting critical infrastructure projects across the UK.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Commercial Assistant or someone with a strong commercial administration background to join a high-performing team and play a key role in supporting project delivery.

What will the role look like?

  • Supporting the commercial team with day-to-day commercial activities and reporting.
  • Analysing project data to identify trends, discrepancies, and potential errors.
  • Preparing cost comparisons and commercial reports to support decision-making.
  • Supporting the preparation of applications for payment and associated documentation.
  • Assisting with forecasting using Saviom and maintaining accurate project cost information.
  • Coordinating with the client, project teams, and wider Laing O'Rourke stakeholders.
  • Managing and maintaining commercial records and project documentation.
  • Using systems including Coins, Excel (including Pivot Tables), and Saviom to analyse data, produce reports, and support forecasting.
  • Supporting the review and resolution of commercial queries.
  • Providing accurate and timely commercial information to support project performance.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • Previous experience in a Commercial Assistant, Commercial Administrator, Project Support, or similar commercial role.
  • Confident using Excel (including Pivot Tables) and commercial systems such as Coins; experience using Saviom or similar forecasting/resource planning software is desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Confident using Microsoft Excel, including Pivot Tables and data analysis.
  • Experience using commercial systems such as Coins (desirable).
  • Ability to analyse data, identify errors, and provide accurate reporting.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Previous construction experience is desirable but not essential.
