Commercial Counsel
Are you a commercial lawyer looking to make a real impact in a business that helps build the UK's infrastructure?
At Tarmac, who you are matters. We are currently looking for a Commercial Counsel to join our Legal team. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of one of the UK's leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions businesses, partnering with senior leaders across the organisation to provide strategic legal advice and commercial support.
You'll play a key role in helping Tarmac successfully manage legal risk, support business growth and deliver major projects, all while working within a collaborative and forward-thinking legal team.
The Opportunity
As Commercial Counsel, you will provide expert legal advice across a broad range of commercial matters, supporting multiple business units and stakeholders throughout Tarmac.
You will be responsible for:
- Negotiating and advising on complex commercial contracts and projects
- Managing disputes
- Supporting various initiatives
- Helping shape the legal strategy behind key business decisions
This is a highly visible role that offers exposure to senior leadership, strategic projects and a diverse range of legal challenges.
Main Responsibilities
In this role you will:
- Provide commercial legal advice across Tarmac's operations and business functions
- Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts and supply agreements
- Management and resolution of contract-related disputes
- Support the legal response to health and safety incidents and regulatory matters
- Partner with operational and functional leaders to identify and manage legal risks
- Support on regulatory and compliance issues as part of commercial matters
- Support intellectual property protection and strategy across the business
- Support on commercial elements of M&A
- Work alongside external legal advisers
- Support strategic projects, joint ventures, collaboration agreements and corporate initiatives
- Deliver legal training and guidance to colleagues across the organisation
- Develop and maintain legal templates, toolkits and best practice resources

Essential
What We're Looking For
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive
- Experience in commercial law gained in private practice, in-house or a combination of both
- Solid experience drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial contracts
- Experience managing commercial disputes and legal risk
- Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills
- Strong commercial awareness and pragmatic decision-making ability
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
Desirable
- In-house legal experience within a large corporate organisation
- Experience supporting regulated industries, manufacturing, construction or infrastructure environments
- Knowledge of health and safety regulatory matters
- Familiarity with intellectual property issues
- Familiarity with competition law and data protection
