I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Opportunity
As Commercial Director, you'll take ownership of the performance, culture and growth of the Scottish region, leading a team of approximately eight Account Executives and Account Directors.
Working closely with senior leadership, you'll be responsible for developing your people, driving commercial performance and embedding a consistent, market-leading client service proposition across the region. You'll balance operational leadership with strategic thinking, ensuring your team has everything they need to deliver exceptional outcomes for clients while supporting the wider growth ambitions of the business.
This is a modern leadership role, far removed from the traditional branch management position. Whilst having an existing portfolio of clients would be advantageous, it isn't essential. Your success will be measured by the strength of your leadership, your ability to develop others and the commercial performance of your region.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, inspire and develop a team of approximately eight Account Executives and Account Directors.
- Drive commercial growth through effective leadership, coaching and performance management.
- Create a high-performance culture built around accountability, collaboration and client excellence.
- Embed the firm's client service and stewardship model across the region.
- Support strategic growth initiatives and identify opportunities to strengthen market presence.
- Work closely with executive leadership to deliver regional business plans and develop future talent.
- Build strong internal and external relationships to enhance the reputation of the business.
- Maintain a small portfolio of strategic client relationships where appropriate, although this is not essential.
