The Business
Our client is one of the UK's leading private-label food manufacturers and part of a major international food group with substantial scale, resources and long-term investment capability.
Across its core categories, the business holds significant positions with many of the UK's largest grocery retailers. Yet the opportunity ahead is considerably bigger than the business of today. The strategy is ambitious.
Over the next three to five years, the organisation intends to accelerate growth across its established categories while developing new products, new capabilities and new revenue streams. Significant investment is already being directed towards innovation, manufacturing capability, category insight and commercial excellence to make that ambition a reality.
At the centre of this strategy sits a £250m+ commercial portfolio and some of the most strategically important retailer relationships within the group. They now need an exceptional commercial leader to take ownership of it.
This is not simply about protecting what already exists. It is about building what comes next.
The Opportunity
As Commercial Director- Retail, you will assume commercial leadership of a substantial £250m+ P&L, taking responsibility for major UK Grocery partnerships and a significant multi-category portfolio. The scale is substantial. So is the mandate.
You will be expected to lead today's performance while simultaneously creating the commercial blueprint for the next phase of growth. That means protecting and developing strategically important customer partnerships, driving sales and EBIT performance, identifying future growth platforms, influencing innovation and investment, and ensuring the organisation continues to evolve ahead of both its customers and competitors.
You will lead a high-calibre Commercial Team, but your influence will extend far beyond Sales. Working across Category, Innovation, Operations, Supply Chain, Finance and the wider Executive Leadership Team, you will help determine where the business competes, where it invests and how it wins.
Externally, you will operate at the most senior levels within UK Grocery, developing relationships that move beyond traditional supplier negotiations towards genuine strategic partnerships. Internally, you will be a major voice in shaping the future direction of the business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
