The Opportunity
Hill McGlynn are currently working with an established and growing multidisciplinary contractor who are looking to appoint an experienced Commercial Director to join their senior leadership team, based from their offices in Potters Bar.
Our client delivers a diverse portfolio of projects across new build, façades and cladding, repairs and refurbishment, providing a broad range of construction services to clients across the sector.
We are looking for a commercially astute and strategically minded individual who can take overall responsibility for the commercial function, whilst playing a key role in the continued growth and development of the business.
Experience across new build, façades, cladding, repairs or refurbishment would be highly advantageous, although we are open to candidates with a strong commercial background within the wider construction industry.
The Role
As Commercial Director, you will provide senior commercial leadership across the business, overseeing commercial strategy, project performance, risk management and the development of the commercial team.
Key Responsibilities Will Include
- Taking overall responsibility for the commercial performance of the business and its project portfolio.
- Developing and implementing the company's commercial strategy.
- Providing strategic commercial advice to the Managing Director and wider senior leadership team.
- Leading, mentoring and developing the commercial team.
- Overseeing pre-construction, estimating, procurement, contract management and project commercial performance.
- Ensuring projects are commercially managed from tender through to final account.
- Monitoring project profitability, cash flow, margins, costs and commercial risks.
- Reviewing and negotiating main contracts, subcontracts and associated commercial agreements.
- Identifying commercial risks and opportunities across the company's project portfolio.
- Supporting the business with tenders, procurement strategies and contract negotiations.
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensuring robust commercial processes, systems and procedures are implemented and maintained.
- Providing commercial leadership on major projects and supporting the operational teams in achieving project objectives.
- Driving continuous improvement across the commercial function.
- Supporting the directors with business development and strategic growth opportunities.

About You
We are looking for a Commercial Director, Commercial Manager or Senior Commercial professional who is ready to take the next step into a board-level or senior leadership position.
You Will Ideally Have
- Significant commercial experience within the construction industry.
- A proven track record managing the commercial function across multiple projects.
- Experience working for a main contractor, specialist contractor or multidisciplinary contractor.
- Strong knowledge of construction contracts, procurement, cost management and commercial risk.
- Excellent understanding of project profitability, forecasting and cash flow.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
- Proven experience leading and developing commercial teams.
- The ability to operate strategically while remaining commercially hands-on when required.
- Excellent communication, leadership and decision-making skills.
- Experience within new build, façades, cladding, repairs and refurbishment would be a significant advantage.
- Relevant commercial/construction qualifications such as MRICS, MCIOB or equivalent would be advantageous.
