The Role

We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Commercial Manager to be part of our Commercial Team. This role will support our drive to commercial performance, strengthening cost control, and the strategic growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

Discipline Development

  • Identify the broader contractual and commercial development needs of our sales & tendering, design and construction departments
  • Introduce structured commercial workflows to ensure consistent governance across all projects, including early risk areas

Business Development

  • Support the business in developing its key strategic objectives
  • Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers and contractors to support long-term growth

Tendering Support

  • Support the Sales & Tendering team in preparing tenders that are aligned with specification requirements and commercial expectations
  • Work collaboratively with Tendering Engineers to help maintain accurate, well-evidenced cost estimates based on client specifications
  • Provide guidance on key assumptions, commercial risks and bid considerations to support robust and consistent tender submissions
  • Review tender documentation alongside the estimating team, on major projects, offering commercial, contractual and technical input to help strengthen the quality of tenders

Supply Chain & Resource Management

  • Highlight risks in tendering documentation, alongside identifying commercial issues
  • Work collaboratively with the procurement team, when necessary, to support the sourcing of materials and subcontractors
  • Assist with orders, valuations and invoices to help maintain control, reduce exposure and ensure appropriate commercial oversight

Change Control and Claims

  • Monitor resource allocation and programme schedules, briefing the project management team prior to project start.
  • Track key project changes, notifications and variations, ensuring accurate recording and gaining client agreement in advance
  • Support the preparation and resolution of claims, loss and expense matters and final account negotiations where required

Cost Control & Reporting

  • Prepare and submit interim valuations, payment applications, cash flow and final accounts
  • Provide leadership with monthly costings, budget reviews and progress updates
  • Manage budget queries and commercial discussions in a timely manner

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive improvements in commercial and tendering processes
  • Recommend cost-saving strategies and efficiencies.
  • Contribute to the development of all departments, including knowledge sharing and best practices

Skills & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Engineering, Construction or a related discipline
  • Professional membership, or working towards membership, of a relevant body such as RICS or CIOB is desirable
  • Significant experience in a commercial management and/or quantity surveying role within construction, utilities or infrastructure
  • Strong working knowledge of JCT and NEC contracts and their practical application
  • Experience within contestable electrical connections, ICP, utilities or a closely related sector
  • Strong negotiation, cost management, forecasting and risk management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High attention to detail and a disciplined approach to record keeping
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel
  • Experience with using MS365 CoPilot in a commercial & contractual context

  • Full Time, Permanent role
  • Monday - Friday 8:30am - 17:00pm (up to 40 hours per week)
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays as standard
