About The Role

We are currently seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to join an established civil engineering contractor delivering a diverse portfolio of infrastructure and civil engineering projects.

This is a senior commercial position, working closely with the senior management and operational teams to ensure projects are delivered profitably, commercially controlled and in line with contractual requirements. The successful Commercial Manager will have strong experience within civil engineering and be confident managing multiple projects, commercial teams and client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take overall commercial responsibility for a portfolio of civil engineering and infrastructure projects.
  • Lead and manage Quantity Surveyors and wider commercial teams.
  • Provide commercial guidance and support to Project Managers, Contracts Managers and operational teams.
  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, cost/value reconciliations and cash flow.
  • Oversee valuations, applications for payment, variations, compensation events and final accounts.
  • Identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review and negotiate subcontractor packages, orders and accounts.
  • Manage client and subcontractor relationships, ensuring contractual obligations are understood and maintained.
  • Monitor project performance against budgets, programmes and commercial targets.
  • Prepare and review monthly CVRs, forecasts and commercial reports for senior management.
  • Support the procurement of subcontractors, suppliers and plant.
  • Ensure contractual notices and commercial correspondence are issued within required timescales.
  • Assist with dispute resolution and commercial negotiations where required.
  • Drive continuous improvement across commercial processes and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with company commercial policies, contractual requirements and relevant legislation.

About You

The successful Commercial Manager will ideally have:

  • Significant commercial management experience within civil engineering or infrastructure.
  • Previous experience working for a main contractor or specialist civil engineering contractor.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC and/or other relevant construction contracts.
  • Proven experience managing Quantity Surveyors and commercial teams.
  • Strong understanding of cost control, forecasting, CVRs and project financial management.
  • Experience managing subcontractor procurement and accounts.
  • Excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.
  • A degree/HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline is desirable.
  • Relevant professional membership such as RICS or CICES would be advantageous.
