Commercial Manager
Coventry | Full Time | Permanent
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Commercial Manager to lead our Commercial Team, comprising Quantity Surveyors, Estimators, and a Commercial Administrator. This role is central to driving commercial performance, strengthening cost control, and supporting the strategic growth of the business across civil engineering and utility projects.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary commercial team including QSs, Estimators, and a Commercial Administrator.
- Identify development needs and establish a high-performing, robust commercial function.
- Introduce structured commercial workflows and ensure consistent commercial governance across all projects.
Business Development & Work Winning
- New work acquisition, supporting integration of new work opportunities, supporting business development, and planned expansion areas.
- Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and partners to support repeat business and long-term growth.
Estimating & Tender Management
- Oversee the pricing of all projects to tender specification.
- Ensure Estimators produce accurate, detailed cost estimates based on drawings, specifications, and site conditions.
- Validate assumptions, manage cost risks, and support bid submissions.
- Review tender documentation and advise on commercial, contractual, and technical considerations.

Contract & Resource Management
- Review contract documents and highlight risks, obligations, and commercial issues.
- Manage the sourcing of materials, labor, and subcontractors, collating costings, and comparing against budgets.
- Prepare subcontract enquiries, assess quotations, place orders, and certify valuations and invoices.
Project Mobilisation & Change Control
- Monitor resource allocation and programme schedules, briefing the project management team prior to project start.
- Track project changes, variations, and notices, ensuring accurate recording and gaining client agreement in advance.
- Support value engineering initiatives and ensure estimates reflect current site conditions and operational constraints.
Cost Control, Reporting & Client Liaison
- Prepare and submit interim valuations, payment applications, and final accounts.
- Monitor project costs and produce weekly P&L reports.
- Provide Directors with weekly costings, budget reviews, and progress updates.
- Maintain excellent client communication, managing budget queries and commercial discussions professionally.

Continuous Improvement
- Drive improvements in commercial and estimating processes.
- Recommend cost-saving strategies and efficiencies.
- Contribute to the development of contract/project management systems across the Project Management Team.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Quantity Surveyor.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience within Civil Engineering or Utilities.
- Proven experience securing new works contracts.
- Strong commercial and financial awareness with excellent numerical ability.
- Experience leading teams and working with senior stakeholders.
- Effective communication skills, able to collaborate with internal teams, clients, and suppliers.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and remain calm under pressure.
- High level of IT proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Extremely organised, self-motivated, and discreet when handling confidential information.
