Job Description
Overview
AtkinsRealis are recruiting for a permanent Commercial Manager to join their growing Rail Systems business, supporting the delivery of complex design & build projects.
This role will take responsibility for the commercial performance of projects, ensuring robust contract management, cost control, and value optimisation while supporting successful delivery in a highly regulated railway environment.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will ideally have experience within a consultancy or contractor environment, preferably within the UK Rail or infrastructure, with experience of public sector procurement processes and must understand commercial drivers such as balancing risk, opportunity and financial returns within project delivery.
The candidate should have extensive experience in a Commercial Manager or Senior Quantity Surveyor role with a track record of tendering and/or delivering projects.
They report to the Senior Commercial Manager and will become an integral member of a growing commercial team.

What We Do
The Rail Systems business operates as its own P&L business, delivering design & build contracting to UK&I rail clients, specialising in the design, construction, testing, and commissioning of rail systems projects; primarily serving as a Principal Contractor for Network Rail.

Your Role
- Ensure successful bidding and delivery of commercial performance within a range of contracts / projects, safeguarding the interests of the business.
- Relationship management with clients, driving resolution of any project-level issues and realisation of opportunities.
- Lead Commercial support on and delivery on projects and be an integral member of the Commercial team, supporting the achievement of the business objectives and KPI’s.
- Implementation of effective commercial controls across the portfolio ensuring efficiency and accuracy of data.
- Support the resolution of claims and disputes.
- Review and negotiate proposed main and sub-contract terms and conditions, managing risk to the business and any escalated approvals.
- Support strategic bids in negotiations and dialogue with clients and sub-contractors, and to ensure contracts are executed in line with group requirements.
- Promote compliance with the AtkinsRéalis governance processes and procedures.
- Lead and support a commercial team ensuring individuals are meeting their objectives and ensuring continued development and growth.

About You
- Strong knowledge of common forms of Contract (NEC4 experience is ideal).
- Experience in change control and claims management.
- Customer facing experience with a “win-win” philosophy and proactive attitude.
- Good understanding of client behaviours and drivers in a capital project environment.
- Capable of managing and developing a team of surveyors to ensure commercial performance.
- Excellent understanding of commercial processes, cost control and contract administration.
- Commensurate IT skills.
Qualifications
- Appropriate Degree and/or appropriate professional qualification (RICS, CICES).
