Role Purpose

The Commercial Manager provides high-quality commercial and contractual expertise to support the organisation’s strategic objectives. The role is responsible for protecting the company’s commercial and legal interests, managing risk, and ensuring that all contracts with customers, partners and suppliers are compliant, well-governed and deliver value for money.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial & Contract Management

  • Lead and manage commercial activities across the full contract lifecycle, including pre-procurement, procurement, negotiation, contract award and ongoing contract management.
  • Act as the primary contractual point of contact with customers, suppliers and partners, ensuring clarity of rights, obligations and accountability.
  • Provide expert advice on contract law, terms and conditions, risk allocation, disputes, variations and contract changes.
  • Ensure contracts are administered effectively to deliver intended commercial outcomes and value.

Risk, Governance & Compliance

  • Identify, assess and manage commercial and legal risks, putting in place appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK (and where applicable international) contract and procurement legislation, governance policies, ethical standards and quality frameworks (e.g. ISO 9001).
  • Protect the organisation’s contractual rights while ensuring all obligations are met.

Financial & Performance Management

  • Support delivery of financial targets, including revenue, margin and cost controls, without compromising safety or service quality.
  • Contribute to pricing strategies, business cases and procurement approvals in line with delegated authority.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders across the business to support successful commercial outcomes.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, suppliers and partners, resolving issues proactively and professionally.
  • Communicate commercial risks, opportunities, rights and obligations clearly to non-commercial stakeholders.

Continuous Improvement & Leadership

  • Implement and contribute to the development of commercial policies, processes and best practice.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through continuous development and awareness of market and industry trends.
  • Model organisational values, promote inclusive behaviours and contribute positively to a collaborative culture.

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong practical experience in commercial management and contract law, ideally within complex or regulated environments.
  • Experience across at least one core phase of the contract lifecycle (pre-procurement, procurement or contract management), with working knowledge of the others.
  • Proven ability to manage risk, negotiate effectively and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Sound commercial judgement with strong financial and business awareness.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building and problem-solving skills.

Desirable

  • Experience of government, defence, aviation or public-sector contracting environments.
  • Knowledge of international contracting issues (e.g. export controls, ITAR, anti-bribery and anti-slavery legislation).
  • Experience using commercial, contract management and digital collaboration tools.
  • Professional qualification or ongoing CPD in a relevant commercial or legal discipline.
