I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Defining and maintaining a complete asset scope in a transparent format that reflects changes as instructed by HS2. This document will form the basis of forecasting.
- Clearly identify how each aspect of the scope is being delivered – self-delivery or by a subcontractor (if subcontracted, provide the name of the subcontractor).
- Commercially deal with Asset NCRs and Defects, ensuring the correct contractual processes are covered to avoid the risk of MWCC Disallowed Cost.
- Understand the Asset Route to Assurance and Handover, coordinating with the Assurance Team to ensure all subcontractor information is received before issuing Completion Certificates.
- Ensure any remaining scope that needs to be procured is clearly visible and communicate it to the procurement team for inclusion in their schedule. Work closely with the procurement team to ensure the scope is procured in time to meet the programme. Issue instructions to subcontractors timely to avoid delays.
- Ensure the Stage 5 design scope for subcontractors is clearly understood and design progress is visible.
- Support the Delivery Team in understanding scope.
- Review the Asset Programme narrative before submitting the MWCC Cl.32 to HS2, ensuring it reads contractually and commercially accurately. Cross-reference CEs/PMIs, EWNs, etc., and ensure the programme accurately reflects the causes for variances, referencing Risk where appropriate (e.g., Contractor or Employer Risks).
