Commercial Manager – Well-Regarded Civils Subcontractor – Stable & Well-Ran Business with Ambitious Growth Plans!

My client is a major civils subcontractor with an excellent reputation and a significant presence across London and the Southeast. Their core offering encompasses groundworks, RC frames, infrastructure, earthworks, and heavy civils.

They've now established their Luton regional office as part of their wider growth strategy, with the view to scale to £200m TO by 2028. Currently occupied by four very capable Quantity Surveyors, including two Seniors and an MQS, they are now looking to appoint a Commercial Manager to lead their expansion outside of London, adopting a significant portfolio of projects.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The CEO deems this role a crucial appointment, and is willing to pay accordingly (PAYE or Ltd Day Rate)

Responsibilities:

  • Commercially manage a significant portfolio of 7 – 8 live projects, valued in excess of £50m & growing, with a couple £15m+ schemes due to land
  • Manage a team of 4 capable and experienced Quantity Surveyors, and hire additional support as the work bank scales
  • Holistic view of project performance with monthly site visits to ensure progress is in keeping with tender margin expectations

Desirable Traits:

  • Team player – the CD is after a Commercial Manager that works well within a team, motivating and supporting his reports as required
  • Contractually knowledgeable - big schemes in Bristol due to land £15m - will need an SQS sitting on this project
  • Groundworks experience is desirable but not essential, since this role is more focused on the commercial management of a business unit, as opposed to the day to day hands-on duties of a subcontracting Surveyor
