Commercial Manager - Payments
Location: Eversholt, Bedfordshire, near Milton Keynes
Working pattern: Hybrid, minimum 2 days per week in the office
Salary: £55,000–£70,000
Bonus: Up to 15% performance-related bonus
I’m supporting an established digital services business with the recruitment of a Commercial Manager to take ownership of a growing payments portfolio.
This is a commercially accountable role rather than a traditional payments operations position. The successful candidate will be responsible for improving revenue and profitability across the portfolio through strong commercial judgement, forecasting, portfolio allocation, and effective use of available payment capacity.
The initial focus will be predominantly PayPal, although the scope is expected to broaden across other payment channels over time.
The Role
You will:
- Own commercial performance across the payments portfolio, delivering revenue and profitability against agreed plans and reforecasts.
- Analyse account, revenue, profitability, dispute, and capacity data to make clear commercial decisions.
- Decide how available payment capacity should be allocated across accounts and opportunities.
- Balance growth and profitability with account health, operational constraints, and longer-term portfolio value.
- Identify underperformance, emerging risks, and commercial opportunities and take corrective action quickly.
- Maintain robust forecasts and recommend changes where assumptions or performance move materially.
- Work closely with Marketing to improve spend efficiency, traffic allocation, and commercial return.
- Work with Operations, Data, Customer Service, and Technology to ensure commercial plans are practical and deliverable.
- Identify and test new commercial opportunities, including new markets, payment strategies, and approaches to portfolio optimisation.
- Continuously improve the reporting, analysis, and tools used to manage the portfolio.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The primary commercial accountability is sustainable payments profitability against agreed and reforecast plans, while operating within agreed account-health and operational-risk parameters.
What We’re Looking For
You are likely to have:
- 5+ years of relevant commercial experience in payments, fintech, digital billing, subscription businesses, performance marketing, or a closely related environment.
- Experience owning or materially influencing revenue, profitability, or portfolio performance.
- Experience managing a portfolio of accounts, clients, products, or revenue streams.
- Strong experience using data to make commercially significant decisions rather than simply producing reports.
- Strong forecasting, scenario-planning, and commercial modelling skills.
- A good understanding of the trade-offs between growth, profitability, and risk.
- Experience working across functions such as Marketing, Operations, Data, Customer Service, and Technology.
- Confidence making decisions where information may be incomplete or changing.
- Strong Excel or Google Sheets capability and experience using reporting or dashboard tools.
- Direct PayPal experience would be advantageous but is not essential. Experience within merchant acquiring, card payments, high-risk payments, or another specialist payments environment would also be highly relevant.
