At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.
We are looking for a commercially astute and strategic Commercial Manager to lead the development and execution of innovative commercial partnerships across some of our most important and complex NHS accounts. This is a highly visible role where you will work closely with senior internal stakeholders and healthcare decision-makers to shape customer solutions, optimise commercial performance, and accelerate business growth.

- Leading opportunity management activities to drive commercial excellence and maximise business success.
- Designing and implementing value propositions tailored to customer needs and organisational priorities.
- Managing complex commercial negotiations, pricing strategies, service agreements, and contract terms.
- Building and maintaining senior-level relationships with NHS Trusts, procurement leaders, finance directors, and executive stakeholders.
- Driving stakeholder mapping, customer influence strategies, and non-clinical engagement plans within target accounts.
- Collaborating with Business Unit Directors, Sales Directors, Area Business Managers and cross-functional teams to deliver innovative commercial solutions.
- Managing framework agreements and contract governance while partnering closely with Legal teams to ensure commercially robust outcomes.
- Analysing profitability and developing strategies to optimise account- and brand-level gross margin performance.
- Leading tender and procurement activities whilst identifying opportunities to simplify, standardise, and improve commercial outcomes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
