Job Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, commercially minded marketing professional to join Telford & Wrekin Council as a Commercial Marketing and Business Development Officer.
The role is part time, 3 days per week (9am–5pm) and is initially offered on a 6-month fixed-term basis, with a view to extend.
You will work closely with the Commercial Services Team Leader and a range of service areas to support the promotion and growth of the Council’s traded and other commercially focused services.
Your main duties will include developing and delivering targeted business-to-business (B2B) marketing and business development activity, undertaking market and customer research, identifying opportunities for growth and developing marketing campaigns and content to reach existing and prospective customers.
A particular focus will be on services for schools, academies, Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) and identified out-of-borough markets, alongside other commercially focused Council services where agreed.
You will work with service teams to develop clear and compelling service propositions, build relationships with prospective and existing customers and help generate enquiries and leads. The role will also support the development of the Telford Education Services website as an effective commercial shop window for traded services.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will also be able to manage your own workload effectively, develop engaging content across a range of channels and work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders across a large and complex organisation.
