Commercial Officer – Site Operations

Burton-on-Trent | Office & Site Based

£40,000 + £5,000 Car Allowance + Bonus & Benefits

Are you commercially minded, good with numbers and comfortable working closely with operational and site teams?

Perhaps you’re currently working as a Commercial Officer, Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Cost Controller or Project Cost Controller and looking for an opportunity where you can take more ownership and develop your commercial experience.

Eaton Syalon are exclusively partnering with an established and growing engineering organisation to recruit a Commercial Officer into a newly created role within its developing commercial function.

This is a practical, hands-on commercial position supporting time and materials (T&M) projects, making sure that the work being delivered on site is accurately captured, evidenced, invoiced and ultimately recovered.

You’ll work closely with the Site Operations Manager and wider operational teams, so we’re looking for someone who enjoys being close to project delivery rather than operating purely from behind a spreadsheet.

What will you be doing?

You’ll take responsibility for the day-to-day commercial control of site activities, keeping a close eye on project costs, labour, materials, invoicing and commercial records.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring project costs, revenue, margin and forecasts
  • Tracking labour, materials, equipment and subcontract costs against agreed rates
  • Making sure all chargeable project costs are captured and recovered
  • Reviewing labour and site timesheets, including overtime, travel and standby
  • Reconciling timesheets against payroll, attendance and client records
  • Preparing accurate and timely T&M client invoices
  • Monitoring completed but unbilled work
  • Making sure materials and purchased costs are correctly allocated and re-invoiced
  • Maintaining supporting purchase orders, invoices, delivery notes and client approvals
  • Monitoring PO coverage and escalating potential commercial risks
  • Recording delays, downtime, disruption and changes to scope
  • Maintaining evidence to support the recovery of additional costs
  • Supporting variations and commercial notices
  • Resolving invoice queries and discrepancies
  • Maintaining accurate and auditable commercial records
  • Working closely with Finance, Site Operations, Procurement, Payroll and project teams

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You don’t need to tick every traditional QS box. What’s more important is that you’re commercially switched on, comfortable working with project costs and have the confidence to work closely with operational teams.

Ideally, you’ll have experience across some of the following:

  • Cost control or commercial support within engineering, construction, industrial or site operations
  • Time and materials contracts
  • Labour and timesheet cost recovery
  • Client invoicing and supporting documentation
  • Tracking project costs, revenue and margin
  • Purchase orders and commercial terms
  • Variations, additional works or change control
  • Working with operational or site-based teams
  • Excel and financial, ERP or project management systems
  • Identifying unrecovered costs or commercial risks

A relevant Degree, HNC/HND or commercial/Quantity Surveying qualification would also be beneficial rather than a prerequisite.

More than anything, we’re looking for someone pragmatic, commercially curious and willing to get involved. The business is evolving and this is an opportunity to join at an exciting point, help establish stronger commercial controls and develop into a broader commercial position as the function grows.
