Our Commercial Operations Manager enjoys bringing order to complexity, building trusted relationships and making things happen behind the scenes. You'll become the operational owner of Herd's commercial lifecycle, ensuring every opportunity progresses smoothly from initial conversation through to successful mobilisation and invoicing.
You'll thrive on improving commercial processes, taking ownership and helping shape how Herd wins, mobilises and delivers client engagements. This is a brand-new role that we're creating as Herd continues to grow. We see significant opportunity for the successful candidate to shape the role, influence how we operate and grow with the business over the coming years. You'll bring a people-first approach that aligns with Herd's "non-consultancy vibes" - collaborative, pragmatic, low-ego and grounded in doing what's right for the client. You'll Own The Operational Journey From
Opportunity → Proposal → Contract → Mobilisation → Delivery → Invoicing → Renewal
Working closely with our CEO, senior leaders, Delivery teams and our Business Manager, you'll ensure every opportunity progresses smoothly from initial conversation through to successful delivery. You'll have the autonomy to improve our commercial processes and become a trusted partner in shaping how Herd wins and mobilises client engagements.
What you'll be doing
Commercial Operations
- Become the primary operational contact following client introductions.
- Build trusted relationships with clients, partners and suppliers throughout the commercial lifecycle.
- Coordinate proposals, Statements of Work, NDAs and consultancy contracts.
- Draft first-pass Statements of Work using Herd templates.
- Review consultancy contracts, Statements of Work and NDAs, identifying commercial risks, unusual terms and areas requiring clarification or escalation.
- Coordinate contract negotiations, approvals and execution.
- Maintain contract registers and commercial documentation.
- Maintain framework information, rate cards and commercial documentation.
- Prepare pricing models, commercial scenarios and workshare models to support decision-making.
- Maintain CRM accuracy and commercial pipeline information.
- Support account planning and renewal activity.
- Support the preparation of proposals, bids and commercial responses where required.
Client Operations
- Coordinate consultant mobilisation and client onboarding.
- Liaise with our Security Vetting Lead to ensure consultants have the appropriate clearances in place before starting client engagements.
- Coordinate onboarding requirements with clients.
- Ensure new projects are established correctly for time recording and reporting.
- Maintain mobilisation checklists and operational playbooks.
- Keep Client Delivery Directors organised with clear actions, commercial oversight and timely follow-up.
Commercial Governance
- Maintain standard commercial templates, playbooks and guidance.
- Ensure contracts are fully executed, appropriately stored and easy to retrieve.
- Maintain pricing assumptions and framework rate cards.
- Continuously improve Herd's commercial processes and ways of working.
- Help ensure Herd is known as one of the easiest consultancies in the UK to buy from and work with.
Business Operations
Working closely with our Business Manager, you'll ensure they have everything required to invoice clients accurately and on time, including:
- Purchase Orders
- Billing schedules
- Client billing contacts
- Invoice requirements
- Timesheet approval routes

- A commercially minded professional who enjoys bringing order to complexity and making things happen behind the scenes.
- Comfortable becoming the primary operational contact following introductions from our CEO, ensuring opportunities continue to move forward smoothly and professionally.
- Experienced working within a management consultancy or professional services organisation, ideally supporting technology and business change consulting engagements within UK Central Government or the wider public sector.
- Confident coordinating proposals, Statements of Work, NDAs and consultancy contracts, with the judgement to identify commercial risks, unusual terms and areas requiring clarification or escalation.
- Commercially aware, with the ability to support pricing models, commercial scenarios and workshare models that help inform better business decisions.
- A relationship builder who is able to foster long-term relationships with clients, partners and suppliers whilst embracing Herd's "non-consultancy vibes".
- Someone who enjoys improving systems, introducing structure and making complicated things feel simple.
- Organised enough to coordinate multiple commercial opportunities simultaneously whilst ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.
- Comfortable using Google Workspace, CRM systems and commercial reporting to support effective decision-making.

Key elements of the role
- Own the operational journey from opportunity through to mobilisation.

- Coordinate consultant mobilisation, onboarding and delivery readiness.

- Work closely with our Business Manager to ensure projects are correctly established and invoicing information is complete.
- Support account planning, renewals, resource planning, utilisation reporting and commercial MI.
- Continuously improve Herd's commercial processes, systems and governance.

Core skills and characteristics
Commercial Operations people at Herd are commercially aware, highly organised and naturally collaborative. Mindset is more important than job title, although you'll bring strong experience of consultancy operations and commercial coordination.
- Excellent commercial judgement and attention to detail.
- Comfortable reviewing consultancy contracts, Statements of Work and NDAs with the confidence to identify commercial issues and know when to escalate them.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple commercial workstreams simultaneously.
- Excellent relationship-building skills, with the confidence to work with senior stakeholders, clients and partners.
- Comfortable working independently, taking ownership and making things happen.

Desirable experience
- Experience supporting technology and business change consulting engagements within UK Central Government or the wider public sector.
- Experience working with public sector procurement frameworks such as G-Cloud, Digital Outcomes & Specialists, CCS frameworks or Bloom.
- Familiarity with Statements of Work, resource augmentation and outcome-based consulting engagements.
- Experience supporting consultancy pricing, commercial modelling or commercial governance activities.
Right to work
You must have the right to work in the UK. Applicants without this will not be progressed. Herd Consulting does not currently offer sponsorship.
Security clearance
Due to the nature of the clients we work with, you may be required to undergo security vetting up to and including Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV) clearance levels.
If you have any reason to believe you may not successfully obtain the required clearance, this must be declared as early as possible and before accepting any offer of employment.
Location
You can be based anywhere across mainland UK. There will be some expectation to travel to client sites as and when needed.
You’ll also be expected to work from our Sheffield office around 2-3 days per week. Outside of that, we’re completely comfortable with folk working remotely from within the UK. Due to the nature of the work we do, remote working from outside of the UK is not permitted.
