Summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious Apprentice to join our Commercial team and begin building a successful career within the freight forwarding industry. Working alongside experienced colleagues, you will gain hands-on experience across customer relationships, sales support, pricing, quotations, and business development.
Wage: £19,000 a year
Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
The pay may rise after a probation period has been successfully completed and reviewed after 12 months.
Training
Course: Business administrator (level 3)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.30pm
37 hours 30 minutes a week
Start date: Monday 9 November 2026
Duration: 1 year 6 months

Course Contents
Skilled in the use of multiple IT packages and systems relevant to the organisation in order to:
- Write letters or emails
- Create proposals
- Perform financial processes
- Record and analyse data
Examples: MS Office or equivalent packages.
What You'll Learn
- Choose the most appropriate IT solution to suit the business problem.
- Update and review databases, record information, and produce data analysis.
- Produce accurate records and documents including: emails, letters, files, payments, reports, and proposals.
- Make recommendations for improvements and present solutions to management.
- Draft correspondence, write reports, and review others' work.
- Maintain records and files, handle confidential information in compliance with the organisation's procedures.
- Coach others in the processes required to complete these tasks.
- Exercises proactivity and good judgement.
- Make effective decisions based on sound reasoning and deal with challenges in a mature way.
- Seek advice of more experienced team members when appropriate.
- Build and maintain positive relationships within their own team and across the organisation.
- Demonstrate ability to influence and challenge appropriately.
- Become a role model to peers and team members, developing coaching skills as they gain area knowledge.
- Demonstrate good communication skills, whether face-to-face, on the telephone, in writing, or on digital platforms.
- Use the most appropriate channels to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate agility and confidence in communications, carrying authority appropriately.
- Understand and apply social media solutions appropriately.
- Answer questions from inside and outside of the organisation, representing the organisation or department.

- Review processes autonomously and make suggestions for improvements.
- Share administrative best-practice across the organisation e.g. coach others to perform tasks correctly.
- Apply problem-solving skills to resolve challenging or complex complaints and be a key point of contact for addressing issues.
- Take responsibility for initiating and completing tasks, manage priorities, and time to successfully meet deadlines.
- Positively manage the expectations of colleagues at all levels and set a positive example for others in the workplace.
- Make suggestions for improvements to working practice, showing understanding of implications beyond the immediate environment (e.g. impact on clients, suppliers, other parts of the organisation).
- Manage resources e.g. equipment or facilities.
- Organise meetings and events, take minutes during meetings, and create action logs as appropriate.
- Take responsibility for logistics e.g. travel and accommodation.
- Use relevant project management principles and tools to scope, plan, monitor, and report.
- Plan required resources to successfully deliver projects.
- Undertake and lead projects as and when required.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What You'll Do at Work
Commercial & Sales Support:
- Assist the Commercial team with identifying and researching new business opportunities across Air Freight, Ocean Freight, Road Freight, and Customs services.
- Support lead generation through prospecting, LinkedIn, email, telephone, referrals, networking, and industry research.
- Assist with maintaining and developing the company’s sales pipeline and prospect database.
- Support the preparation and follow-up of customer quotations, tenders, and commercial proposals.
- Learn how to understand customer requirements and identify appropriate logistics solutions in collaboration with experienced colleagues.
- Develop confidence in communicating with prospective customers through telephone, email, LinkedIn, and face-to-face interactions.
- Progressively take responsibility for developing your own opportunities and customer relationships as your knowledge and experience grow.
Customer Relationship Management:
- Support the Commercial team in building strong, professional, and long-term customer relationships.
- Develop an understanding of customers’ businesses and supply chains to identify opportunities to add value.
- Assist with regular customer contact, follow-ups, and account development activities.
- Respond to customer enquiries promptly and professionally, escalating where appropriate.
- Support the successful onboarding of new customers and ensure relevant information is communicated effectively to the Operations team.
Commercial & Market Intelligence:
- Develop a strong understanding of the freight forwarding industry and Baker Freight’s Air, Ocean, Road, and Customs services.
- Research freight markets, customer sectors, competitors, and industry developments to identify potential opportunities.
- Assist with preparing accurate quotations and commercial information in collaboration with the Operations team.
- Learn about freight pricing, gross profit, margins, and the commercial considerations involved in winning profitable business.
- Attend networking events, exhibitions, and industry functions where appropriate to develop industry knowledge and commercial confidence.

CRM & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of prospects, customer interactions, quotations, and opportunities within the CRM system.
- Assist with maintaining an up-to-date sales pipeline and ensuring opportunities are followed up appropriately.
- Support the preparation of sales activity and pipeline reports.
- Monitor quotation follow-ups and outcomes to understand what drives successful customer conversion.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement:
- Work closely with the Commercial and Operations teams to understand how exceptional service supports customer retention and business growth.
- Collaborate with colleagues to support sales initiatives, marketing activity, and business development campaigns.
- Share customer feedback, ideas, and market intelligence with the wider team.
- Look for opportunities to improve processes, customer communication, and the overall commercial experience.

Requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- GCSE in: English (grade Minimum Grade C or 4)
- Maths (grade Minimum Grade C or 4)
