Head of Geotechnical & Geo-Environmental Engineering who is a Commercial & Technical Geotechnical focused Engineer
A well-established multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Head of Geotechnical & Geo-Environmental Engineering to lead and grow its specialist department. This is a senior leadership role for a commercially minded professional with strong technical expertise and the ability to drive business growth across residential, industrial, logistics, and infrastructure sectors.
The Role
You will lead the geotechnical and geo-environmental function, overseeing project delivery from feasibility through to construction support and close-out, while ensuring technical excellence, compliance, and commercial performance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the department strategically and operationally
- Supporting bids, fee proposals, and client development by bringing a commercial awareness and portfolio of clients to the business.
- Managing project delivery across geotechnical and geo-environmental services
- Reviewing technical reports, designs, and project outputs
- Providing expertise across site investigations, contaminated land, remediation, foundations, earthworks, and ground risk
- Managing team performance, resources, and departmental budgets
- Building strong client relationships and identifying new business opportunities
- Mentoring and developing the existing team
- Promoting innovation, sustainability, and best practice across all activities

About You
You will have significant senior-level experience in geotechnical and/or geo-environmental engineering, ideally within consultancy, with strong leadership and commercial skills.

Essential Requirements:
- Degree or Master’s in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Environmental Engineering, or similar
- Working toward or holding Chartered status
- Strong technical knowledge across ground investigation, contamination assessment, remediation, foundations, slope stability, and earthworks
- Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and complex projects
Desirable Experience:
- Experience with residential, industrial, logistics, or infrastructure projects
- Knowledge of brownfield redevelopment, planning frameworks, and sustainability requirements
- Track record in business development and work winning
