Development Underwriter (Life Sciences) (Commercial UWs Considered!)

Multi-Award-Winning Insurer

Location Flexible

Job Reference: JH-3136LS

We are delighted to be partnering with this multi-award-winning specialist insurer that is seeking a Development Underwriter within its rapidly growing Life Sciences division.

This is an exciting opportunity to join what is arguably one of the most progressive insurers in the market right now. The company is enjoying significant growth across the business, and Life Sciences has been identified as a particularly important area for further expansion. As such, this represents a fantastic time to join the team and play a key role in developing its presence within this fascinating and rapidly evolving sector.

As Development Underwriter, you’ll be responsible for generating and underwriting new business opportunities within the Life Sciences market, working closely with insurance brokers throughout the UK to develop profitable relationships and increase the company’s market share.

Whilst specific experience within the Life Sciences insurance sector would certainly be welcomed, this is by no means essential. Applications are equally encouraged from commercially-minded Underwriters with experience of underwriting other classes of commercial insurance who are keen to develop a specialism within Life Sciences. Crucially, however, you must have a successful track record of writing new business and genuinely enjoy the new business side of underwriting.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

You’ll have a strong desire to be highly visible within the broker market, proactively developing relationships, generating enquiries and identifying opportunities to write profitable business. You’ll enjoy getting out to meet brokers, building your network and promoting the company’s proposition, whilst maintaining the underwriting discipline expected of a highly respected specialist insurer.

This company has a truly entrepreneurial approach to underwriting and a genuine appetite to write business. Rather than being constrained by overly rigid processes, its Underwriters are encouraged to think commercially, develop strong relationships with brokers and seek solutions wherever possible.

This opportunity could therefore suit an existing Life Sciences Development / New Business Underwriter looking to join a business with ambitious growth plans, or an accomplished Commercial Underwriter who has demonstrated a flair for winning new business and would relish the opportunity to move into an exciting specialist market.

The company is also well-renowned for developing and progressing its people. With the business currently in significant growth mode, there are excellent opportunities for ambitious individuals to take on greater responsibility and progress their careers as the organisation continues to expand.

The location is highly flexible and candidates can be based virtually anywhere in the UK. However, given the broker-facing nature of the position, you must be comfortable with regular travel and spending time developing relationships within the market.

You’ll be rewarded with an attractive basic salary (negotiable, depending on experience), together with a lucrative performance-related bonus and an impressive range of market-leading corporate benefits.
