Overview
The London Borough of Harrow is seeking a dynamic and motivated Commercial Waste Sales Officer to play a key role in the growth and development of the Council’s commercial waste service. This exciting opportunity involves promoting and expanding waste and recycling services to businesses across the borough, supporting the Council’s commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable and customer-focused environmental services.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Generating new business opportunities
- Retaining existing customers
- Maximising income through a combination of proactive business development and responsive sales activities
Working closely with local businesses, the postholder will build and maintain strong professional relationships, identify customer needs and provide tailored waste management solutions that deliver value for both customers and the Council.

As a key ambassador for the commercial waste service, the Commercial Waste Sales Officer will contribute to achieving ambitious growth targets, monitor market trends and competitor activity, and help develop innovative approaches to increasing market share. The role requires excellent communication and negotiation skills, a strong customer service ethos and the ability to work independently whilst managing a varied and results-driven workload.
This is an ideal opportunity for a commercially minded individual with a passion for sales and business development who is looking to make a positive impact within a local authority environment. The role offers the chance to contribute to the borough’s environmental objectives while supporting the financial sustainability of an essential public service.
About You
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience of business-to-business sales, preferably in the field of commercial services.
- Experience of successful relationship management including supplier management, and customer/stakeholder management.
- Experience of achieving against sales targets.
- Sound diary and time management skills with the ability to manage a busy workload and prioritise effectively.
- Ability to interpret basic management information reports and use this to make recommendations.
- Knowledge of relevant market, service and products with a commercial focus.
- Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal skills.
- Strong influencing and negotiation skills, able to work intuitively and liaise effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Highly numerate and IT literate, able to work effectively with the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
