With over 1,000 employees and a £150m turnover, we’re growing—and now looking for a Commissioning Engineer to play a key role in our project delivery teams.
The Role
As a Commissioning Engineer you'll be responsible for carrying out commissioning activities on engineering projects across the UK water sector. The role ensures that mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, and automation systems are safely tested, commissioned, and handed over in accordance with design intent, client requirements, and regulatory standards.
What You’ll Be Doing
Technical Responsibilities - Commissioning Delivery
- Provide commissioning input into project design and construction stages.
- Execute commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through to start-up, testing, and handover.
- Commission mechanical, electrical, ICA, and control systems in line with approved procedures.
- Carry out and support FATs, SATs, functional testing, and performance testing.
- Support system start-up, fault finding, defect rectification, and optimisation.
- Work across multiple projects and sites as required by programme needs.
SHEQ & Compliance
- Carry out all commissioning activities in accordance with UK health and safety legislation and site procedures.
- Prepare and follow commissioning risk assessments, method statements, and permits to work.
- Comply with CDM Regulations, electrical safety rules, and isolation procedures.
- Promote a strong safety culture during commissioning and start-up activities.
Stakeholder Communication
- Coordinate day-to-day commissioning activities with construction and engineering teams.
- Support commissioning readiness checks and staged handovers.
- Liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, and OEMs during testing and commissioning.
- Assist with client witness testing and acceptance activities.

Documentation & Handover
- Production of Commissioning Plans and Inspection and Test Plans.
- Complete commissioning test sheets, records, and certificates accurately and on time.
- Contribute to O&M manuals, asset data, and handover documentation.
- Support operator training and operational readiness activities.
- Permits, audits, and compliance support.
- Programme coordination and progress reporting.

What We’re Looking For
Essential
- NVQ Level 3, HNC or HND+ in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- ECS/CSCS.
- Proven hands-on commissioning experience in water and/or energy sector.
- Experience with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control systems (MEICA).
- Execution of pre-commissioning, start-up, functional testing, and performance testing.
- Experience supporting system start-up, fault finding, and defect rectification.
- Experience commissioning PLC, SCADA, and automation-heavy systems.
Desirable
- COMPEX, or similar technical qualifications.
- Proven experience in water sector projects.
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance and inspections (EA, DWI, HSE).
