Role: LV Switchgear Specialist/Commissioning Engineer – Contract
Rate: Circa £850–£950 per day, dependent on experience and location
Contract: Project-based, initially October–November 2026
Location: UK-wide – multiple engineers required across England, Scotland & Wales
Hours: Out-of-hours/night works, typically circa 8/9pm–1/2am
MDE are supporting a nationwide programme of planned electrical works and are looking to speak with experienced LV Switchgear Specialists/Commissioning Engineers who can provide specialist technical support during critical outage works.
The requirement is for experienced commissioning/service engineers capable of independently diagnosing and rectifying LV switchgear faults in a live project environment where restoration of supply is time-critical.
Key Responsibilities
- Attending planned out-of-hours LV works as the specialist commissioning/fault-finding engineer
- Fault-finding on LV switchgear, ACBs and MCCBs
- Diagnosing breakers that fail to close, reset or re-energise
- Intrusive investigation of breaker mechanisms where required
- Checking spring-charging mechanisms, trip coils, closing coils, interlocks and control supplies
- Investigating protection trips and associated control/protection circuits
- Undertaking appropriate repairs or remedial works where safe and within competency
- Testing and proving equipment prior to restoration of supply
- Supporting the site team with the safe restoration of mains power
- Identifying where further upstream isolation or DNO intervention is required
- Troubleshooting temporary generation and associated controls/protection where experienced
- Potentially assisting with temporary generator connections to LV switchboards

Experience with ACBs/MCCBs, protection relays, trip/closing circuits, spring-charging mechanisms, LV switchboards and reactive fault-finding will be particularly relevant.
Generator experience would be a significant advantage, particularly engineers comfortable with temporary generation, ATS/control systems, protection trips and generator fault-finding.
The programme includes sites throughout the UK. We're therefore looking to build a geographically distributed team and are particularly interested in engineers based across the Northwest, Northeast, Midlands, Southeast/South, Southwest and Scotland.
Accommodation can be provided where required for appropriate site allocations.
Applicants should be comfortable working independently, making sound technical decisions under time pressure and taking ownership of fault diagnosis through to safe resolution.
