Communication Support Teaching Assistant – Hearing Resource Base – Temporary Contract
Location: Coventry Sensory Team Hearing Resource Base, Stoke Park Secondary School, Coventry
Rate: £17.17 per hour (Umbrella)
Contract: 21 September 2026 – 23 October 2026 (Initially)
Hours: 32.5 Hours Per Week
Working Hours: 8:15am – 3:45pm (30-minute unpaid lunch break)
Working Pattern: Term Time Only
DBS: Enhanced Children's DBS Required
Pay: Bi-weekly
Summary
Coventry City Council is seeking a dedicated Communication Support Teaching Assistant to join the Hearing Resource Base at Stoke Park Secondary School. This role is crucial in assisting deaf and hearing-impaired students to engage with their education, communicate effectively, and achieve academic success. The successful candidate will collaborate with Teachers of the Deaf, teaching staff, students, and families to ensure that deaf learners are fully integrated into the classroom and school community. While a teaching qualification is not necessary, applicants should have experience supporting children with hearing impairments or Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Key Responsibilities
- Assist deaf students during classroom activities and lessons.
- Interpret and present lesson content in an accessible manner.
- Utilize British Sign Language (BSL) and other communication methods to facilitate learning.
- Clarify and discuss curriculum content to enhance student comprehension.
- Foster the development of communication, language, social, and independent learning skills.
- Modify and prepare learning materials to suit individual student needs.
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support.
- Encourage inclusion within the student's peer group.
- Manage and maintain specialist audiological equipment effectively.
- Track and report on student progress.
- Participate in reviews, assessments, and educational planning.
- Collaborate with teaching staff and specialist sensory teams to ensure comprehensive support.
- Attend meetings and training sessions as needed.

Essential Requirements
- British Sign Language (BSL) Level 2 or equivalent.
- GCSE Grade C/Level 4 (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
- Recent experience supporting children in an educational setting.
- Experience working with deaf children and children with SEND.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interpret lesson content and enhance student understanding.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Capability to work effectively within a team.
- Proficient IT skills.

Desirable
- Experience in a Hearing Resource Base.
- Experience supporting secondary school-age students.
- Knowledge of deaf awareness and hearing impairment support strategies.
- Experience collaborating with Teachers of the Deaf.
